Camshaft Position Sensor: Description and Operation

The Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor is located in the distributor. The CMP sensor consists of a signal generator and a signal rotor. An AC voltage is generated in the CMP sensor when the signal rotor turns. This digital signal (4 pulses/revolution) is sent to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). The PCM uses the CMP sensor signal to distinguish individual cylinders, calculate engine speed, trigger the ignition system, and help determine when to energize the fuel injector.
