Gearshift Control Shaft and Extension Rod Replacement

Removal Procedure
1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.






2. Remove the rear through-bolt of the gearshift control shaft and the nut (3) from the gearshift control lever.






3. Remove the gearshift control joint through-bolt and the nut (6) at the transaxle gearshift shaft (5) and the gearshift control shaft (3) with the gearshift control shaft joint from the vehicle.
4. Remove the front through-bolt of the gearshift control shaft and the nut (4) from the gearshift control shaft joint.
5. Separate the gearshift control shaft joint from the gearshift control shaft (3).






6. Remove the 4 guide plate bolts on the gearshift control lever (2) from the control lever guide plate (4).
7. Remove the extension rod from the guide plate of the gearshift control lever (4).






8. Remove the retaining nut from the extension rod (2) and the 2 washers at the extension rod mounting stud on the transaxle.
9. Remove the extension rod from the vehicle.
10. Inspect the following components, and replace the components if necessary:
^ The gearshift control shaft and the extension rod bushings
Inspect the gearshift control shaft and the extension rod bushings for excessive wear or for damage.
^ The gearshift control shaft
Inspect the gearshift control shaft for damage or for distortion.
^ The extension rod
Inspect the extension rod for damage or for distortion.
^ The gearshift control joint
Inspect the gearshift control joint for damage or for distortion.

Installation Procedure






1. Install the extension rod onto the extension rod mounting stud.
Use the 2 washers and the extension rod retaining nut (2) in order to secure the extension rod.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.






2. Install the extension rod to the guide plate of the gearshift control lever.
Use the 4 guide plate bolts of the gearshift control lever (2) in order to secure the extension rod.
^ Tighten the guide plate bolts of the gearshift control lever (2) to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
^ Tighten the extension rod retaining nut to 40 Nm (29 ft. lbs.).

3. Install the gearshift control shaft joint to the gearshift control shaft (3).
Use the gearshift control shaft front through-bolt and the nut (4) in order to secure the gearshift control shaft joint.
Tighten the front through-bolt of the gearshift control shaft and the nut (4) to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).






4. Install the gearshift control shaft (3) to the transaxle gearshift shaft (5).
Use the gearshift control joint through-bolt and the nut (6) in order to secure the gearshift control shaft.
5. Install the gearshift control shaft (3) to the gearshift control lever.
Use the gearshift control shaft rear through-bolt and the nut.
^ Tighten the gearshift control joint through-bolt and the nut (6) to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
^ Tighten the front through-bolt of the gearshift control shaft and the nut (4) to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).

6. Lower the vehicle

Transmission Fluid Checking Procedure
1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.






2. Remove the transaxle oil level and the filler plug (1) from the transaxle.
3. Inspect the transaxle oil level.
The oil level should be even with the bottom of the transaxle oil level and the filler plug hole.
4. If the oil level is low, add GM Goodwrench Synthetic Manual Transmission Fluid, (GM P/N 12346190) or equivalent SAE 75W-90 GL-4 Gear Oil.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

5. Apply GM P/N 12346004, or the equivalent, in order to seal the threads. Then install the transaxle oil level and the filler plug into the transaxle.
Tighten the transaxle oil level and the filler plug to 21 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
6. Lower the vehicle.
