Door Locks: Description and Operation

REAR DOOR SECURITY LOCK DESCRIPTION

The rear door lock assembly (3) on 4-door models includes a rear door child security lock. This lock engages and disengages with a switch (1) built into the lock assembly. With the switch engaged, you may only open the rear door (2) with the outside handle. You cannot service the rear door child security locks separately. Service the security lock as part of the lock assembly.

DOOR HARDWARE LUBRICATION DESCRIPTION
The following components require periodic lubrication:
^ The door locks
^ The lock cylinders
^ The hinges

Refer to Door Description for types of lubricants.

DOOR DESCRIPTION
This information provides the body service procedures that apply to the front doors and to the rear doors.

The service attaching screws may not contain a thread-locking compound. Treat the threads of the fasteners with GM P/N 12345493 or with the equivalent for the following reasons:
^ In order to prevent looseness of the service screws
^ In order to renew the thread-locking characteristics of the production screws

Apply GM P/N 12345493 to the hardware attachment as a liquid. Upon installation and upon tightening, the adhesive cures in order to bond the attachment in order to prevent the following conditions:
^ Loosening
^ Backing

The adhesive bond does not prevent future attachment removal if required.

The mechanical components of the door assembly are lubricated during assembly. If additional lubrication is required, use the following lubricants:
^ Lubricate all door-lock cylinders with Multi-Purpose Lubricant GM P/N 12346241 or with the equivalent.
^ Lubricate the remainder of the door hardware mechanisms with GM P/N 1052196 Lubriplate Auto-lube A or with the equivalent.

POWER DOOR LOCKS CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
The battery voltage applies at all times through the door lock fuse to the power door lock control module. The control module for the door lock grounds at G203.

Pressing either of the power door lock switches to the UNLOCK position, the control module receives a ground at the UNLOCK INPUT terminal. After applying the ground signal, the control module applies voltage to the UNLOCK OUTPUT terminal and applies a ground to the LOCK OUTPUT terminal.

With power and with ground that is applied to the door lock motors in the power door lock actuators, the power door lock motors turn. This moves the mechanical linkages in the doors that unlock the doors.
