53. Timing Belt Installation
1. Align the mark on the camshaft timing belt pulley (2) with the V mark on the inside of the timing belt cover (1). If not, align the two marks by turning the camshaft. Do not turn the camshaft more than the allowable turning range.
2. Align the punch mark on the crankshaft timing belt pulley (2) with the arrow mark on the oil pump case (1). If not, align the two marks by turning the crankshaft. Do not turn the crankshaft more than the allowable turning range.
Important:
^ Match the arrow mark on the timing belt with the rotating direction of the crankshaft, when installing the timing belt.
^ Ensure that the number 4 piston is at top dead center of the compression stroke.
3. Align the timing marks.
4. Push the tensioner plate up.
5. Install the timing belt.
6. Install the tensioner spring and the spring damper. Ensure that there is not any slack in the timing belt.
7. Install the tensioner stud (1) only.
8. After installing the timing belt, turn the crankshaft 2 rotations clockwise. This will take up the slack in the timing belt.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
9. Tighten the timing belt tensioner stud.
Tighten the timing belt tensioner stud to 11 Nm (97 inch lbs.).
10. Secure the timing belt tensioner bolt.
Tighten the timing belt tensioner bolt to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
11. Confirm again that both sets of timing marks are aligned correctly.
Important: Ensure that the coolant pump-to-oil case seals and the coolant pump-to-cylinder head seals are in place before you install the timing belt cover.
12. Install the timing belt cover (12). Secure the timing belt cover with the 8 bolts and with the 1 nut.
Tighten the timing belt cover nut and the bolts to 11 Nm (97 inch lbs.).
