Transmission Fluid Level Inspection

The automatic transaxle fluid level can be checked by means of a fluid level indicator (dipstick), located next to the shift select cable. By removing the fluid level indicator from the fluid filler tube, the amount of fluid can be gaged by the-amount of fluid on the indicator. If the fluid level is found to be low, only Dexron (tm) automatic transmission fluid GM P/N 12346143, or equivalent, should be added. Use of any other type of transmission fluid could result in transaxle or component failure. Checking fluid level, color and condition at regular intervals will provide early diagnosis information about the transaxle. This information may be used to correct a condition that, if not detected early, could result in major transaxle repairs. For more information refer to Transaxle Fluid Level Checking Procedures.

Important
- When new automatic transmission fluid is red in color, it indicates that red dye was added to the fluid at the assembly plant to distinguish it from engine oil or engine coolant. This red dye is NOT an indication of fluid quality and is NOT permanent. As the vehicle is driven the fluid will become darker in color and may eventually appear light brown. However, if the fluid becomes extremely: dark or loses viscosity, an internal transaxle problem may exist.
