Cylinder Head Replacement
Removal Procedure^ Tools Required
- J 36660-A Torque Angle Meter.
- J 28467-360 Engine Support
Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Drain and recover the coolant. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Cooling System.
3. Remove the duct between the throttle body and the air cleaner.
4. Remove the heater inlet and the throttle body hose from the water outlet.
5. Remove the power brake vacuum hose from the throttle body.
6. Disconnect the following electrical connections:
^ The manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor
^ The evaporative emission (EVAP) canister purge solenoid
^ The camshaft position sensor
7. Remove the generator stud-ended bolt.
8. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement.
9. Install the generator stud-ended bolt.
10. Install the J 28467-360. Refer to Engine Support Fixture.
11. Remove the exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement.
12. Remove the ignition coil and module assembly. Refer to Ignition Coil(s) Replacement in Powertrain Management.
13. Disconnect the camshaft position sensor connector.
14. Remove the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
15. Disconnect the vacuum line from the fuel pressure regulator and the fuel injector harness connector.
16. Remove the fuel line retaining clamp from the bracket on top of the intake camshaft housing.
17. Remove the retaining bolts which secure the fuel rail to the camshaft housing.
18. Remove the fuel rail from the cylinder head.
19. Cover the injector openings in the cylinder head.
20. Cover the injector nozzles.
21. Leave the fuel lines attached and position the fuel rail aside (on top of the master cylinder).
22. Remove the timing chains and sprocket. Refer to Timing Chain, Sprockets, and Tensioner Replacement.
23. Remove the water pump. Refer to Water Pump Replacement in Cooling System.
24. Remove the intake camshaft housing and camshaft. Refer to Intake Camshaft, Housing and Lifter Replacement.
25. Remove the exhaust camshaft housing and camshaft. Refer to Exhaust Camshaft, Housing and Lifter Replacement.
26. Remove the lifters. Refer to Exhaust Camshaft, Housing and Lifter Replacement.
27. Disconnect the electrical connection from the oil pressure switch.
28. Disconnect the radiator inlet (upper) hose from the coolant outlet.
29. Disconnect the coolant temperature sensor connectors.
30. Remove the cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Removal.
Installation Procedure

- J 36660-A Torque Angle Meter.
- J 28467-360 Engine Support
1. Install the cylinder and the gasket. Refer to Cylinder Head Removal.
2. Connect the coolant temperature sensor connectors.
3. Connect the radiator inlet (upper) hose to the coolant outlet.
4. Connect the electrical connection to the oil pressure switch.
5. Install the lifters. Refer to Exhaust Camshaft, Housing and Lifter Replacement.
6. Install the exhaust camshaft housing. Refer to Exhaust Camshaft, Housing and Lifter Replacement.
7. Install the intake camshaft housing. Refer to Intake Camshaft, Housing and Lifter Replacement.
8 Install the water pump. Refer to Water Pump Replacement in Cooling System.
9. Install the timing chain housing and the timing chain. Refer to Timing Chain Housing Replacement.
10. Uncover the injector nozzles.
11. Uncover the fuel injectors openings in the cylinder head.
12. Install the fuel rail to the cylinder head.
13. Install the retaining bolts which secure the fuel rail to the camshaft housing.
14. Install the fuel line retaining clamp from the bracket on top of the intake camshaft housing.
15. Connect the vacuum line to the fuel pressure regulator and the fuel injector harness connector.
16. Install the fuel rail and the fuel injectors. Refer to Fuel Rail Assembly Replacement (w/o EGR) in Powertrain Management.
Important: Before you reinstall the power steering pump, apply a 3-mm bead of GM P/N 12346586 sealer or the equivalent to the joint at the end of the camshaft housing halves.
17. Install the power steering pump assembly. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
18. Install the power steering bolt.
^ Tighten the bolt to 26 Nm (19 ft. lbs.).
19. Connect the camshaft position sensor connector.
20. Connect the electrical connector to the ignition coil and to the module assembly. Refer to Ignition Coil(s) Replacement in Powertrain Management.
21. Install the exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement.
22. Remove the J 28467-360. Refer to Engine Support Fixture.
23. Remove the generator stud - ended bolt.
24. Install the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement.
25. Install the generator stud - ended bolt.
26. Connect the following electrical connections:
^ The MAP sensor
^ The EVAP canister purge solenoid
^ The camshaft position sensor.
27. Install the power brake vacuum hose to the throttle body.
28. Install the heater inlet and the throttle body hose to the water outlet.
29. Install the duct between the throttle body and the air cleaner.
30. Fill the coolant system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Cooling System.
31. Connect the battery cable.
