Harmonic Balancer - Crankshaft Pulley: Service and Repair
Removal Procedure^ Tools Required
- J 24420-C Crankshaft Pulley/Hub Puller/Gear Puller
Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.
Notice: The inertial weight section of the balancer is assembled to the hub with a rubber type material. The correct removal procedure must be followed or movement of the inertial weight section of the hub will destroy the tuning of the balancer.
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement.
3. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
4. Remove the right front tire and wheel assembly.
5. Remove the right splash shield.
6. Support the right side frame and loosen the right side frame bolts in order to access the crankshaft balancer bolt.
7. Remove the balancer retaining bolt. Have an assistant keep the flywheel from turning.
8. Install the J 24420-C on the balancer.
9. Turn the puller screw.
10. Remove the balancer.
Installation Procedure

- J 29113 Crankshaft Balancer Installer
Notice: The inertial weight section of the balancer is assembled to the hub with a rubber type material. The correct removal procedure must be followed or movement of the inertial weight section of the hub will destroy the tuning of the balancer.
1. Coat the front cover seal contact area with engine oil.
2. Apply sealant to the crankshaft key. Apply sealant to the crankshaft keyway. Use GM RTV sealant P/N 1052917 or the equivalent.
3. Place the balancer into position over the key in the crankshaft.
4. Install the J 29113 onto the crankshaft.
5. Pull the balancer into position.
6. Remove the J 29113 from the balancer.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
7. Install the balancer retaining bolt. Have an assistant keep the flywheel from turning.
^ Tighten the bolt to 103 Nm (76 ft. lbs.).
8. Tighten the right side frame bolts.
9. Install the right splash shield.
10. Install the right tire and wheel assembly.
11. Lower the vehicle.
12. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement.
13. Connect the negative battery cable.
14. Perform the Crankshaft Position Variation Learn Procedure.
