Timing Cover: Service and Repair

Removal Procedure

^ Tools Required
- J 28467-360 Engine Support Fixture

Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.





1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Recover the air conditioning (A/C) refrigerant. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging in Heating and Air Conditioning.
3. Drain the cooling system. Recover the cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Cooling System.
4. Install the J 28467-360.
5. Remove the engine mount assembly. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement.
6. Remove the engine mount bracket support.
7. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement.
8. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Powertrain Management.
9. Remove the throttle body tube.
10. Disconnect the power steering liner at the power steering pump.





11. Loosen the top 2 air conditioning (A/C) compressor bolts.
12. Remove the generator. Refer to Compressor Replacement in Heating and Air Conditioning.
13. Remove the generator bracket.
14. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
15. Remove the right front tire and wheel assembly.
16. Remove the right front splash shield.
17. Remove the flywheel inspection cover.
18. Remove the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement
19. Remove the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement.
20. Disconnect the right wheel speed sensor connector and the wire harness from the suspension support.
21. Remove the right ball joint. Refer to Lower Ball Joint Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
22. Remove the right stabilizer shaft from the right suspension support and the right control arm.
23. Remove the suspension support.





24. Remove the A/C compressor to oil pan bolts.





25. Remove the oil filter.
26. Remove the oil filter adapter. Refer to Oil Filter Adapter Removal.
27. Drain the engine oil.
28. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Starting and Charging.
29. Remove the oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement.





30. Remove the crankshaft sensor. Refer to Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor Replacement in Powertrain Management.
31. Remove the lower front cover bolts.
32. Lower the vehicle.
33. Remove the coolant bypass to coolant pump and the manifold. Refer to Heater Hoses Replacement in Heating and Air Conditioning.
34. Remove the radiator hose to coolant outlet housing. Refer to Water Outlet Housing Replacement in Cooling System.





35. Remove the front cover bolts.
36. Remove the front cover.
37. Remove the front cover oil seal. Refer to Crankshaft Front Oil Seal Replacement.
38. Clean the mating surfaces of the following items:
38.1. The front cover
38.2. The oil pan
38.3. The cylinder block
39. Clean the sealing surfaces using degreaser.

Installation Procedure

Important: Do not damage the sealing surfaces.

1. Install the front cover gasket.
2. Apply sealer to both sides of the lower tabs of the front cover gasket. Use GM RTV sealer GM P/N 1052080 or an equivalent.
3. Install the front cover oil seal. Refer to Crankshaft Front Oil Seal Replacement.





4. Place the front cover on the engine.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

5. Install the upper 2 front cover bolts (2).
^ Tighten the bolts to 21 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
6. Install the radiator hose to coolant housing. Refer to Water Outlet Housing Replacement in Cooling System.
7. Install the coolant bypass pipe to coolant pump and the manifold. Refer to Heater Hoses Replacement in Heating and Air Conditioning.
8. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
9. Install the lower front cover bolts.
^ Tighten the small bolts (1) to 21 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
^ Tighten the large bolts (2) to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).





10. Install the crankshaft sensor. Refer to Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor Replacement in Powertrain Management.
11. Install the oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement.
12. Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Starting and Charging.
13. Install the oil filter.





14. Install the A/C compressor to oil pan bolts.
15. Install the stabilizer shaft to the right suspension support and to the control arm.
16. Install the right ball joint. Refer to Lower Ball Joint Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
17. Connect the right wheel speed sensor connector and the wire harness to the suspension support.
18. Install the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement.
19. Install the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement.
20. Install the flywheel inspection cover.
21. Install the right splash shield.
22. Install the right front tire and wheel assembly.
23. Lower the vehicle.





24. Install the A/C compressor top bolts.
25. Install the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
26. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement.
27. Install the engine mount bracket support and the bolts. Refer to Engine Mount Bracket Replacement.
^ Tighten the 8 mm bolts to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
^ Tighten the 12 mm bolts to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).





28. Install the engine mount assembly. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement.
29. Remove the engine support fixture. Refer to Engine Support Fixture.
30. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Cooling System.
31. Fill the oil.
32. Connect the negative battery cable.
