Manual Transmission - M86/M94 Getrag

Removal Procedure





1. Remove the engine air cleaner. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Powertrain Management.
2. Disconnect the VSS harness connector.





3. Remove the VSS retainer bolt and the retainer.
4. Remove the VSS by pulling straight outward.

Installation Procedure





1. Install the VSS by pressing straight inward.
2. Install the VSS retainer and retainer bolt.





3. Connect the VSS harness connector.
4. Install the engine air cleaner. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Powertrain Management.

Shift Cables

Removal Procedure

Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.





1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the console. Refer to Console Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Warning Indicators.
3. Lift up on the cable retainers.





4. Disconnect the cable ends from the shifter.





5. Depress the locking tabs and remove the forward cable from the anchor.





6. On the transmission end, disconnect the cable from the shift actuator.





7. Remove both cables from the underhood cable bracket.
8. Position the passenger front carpet aside. Refer to Carpet Replacement - Front in Body and Frame.





9. Remove the rear floor duct elbow.





10. Separate the grommet from the floor plan.
11. Pull the cables through the passenger floor opening.

Installation Procedure





1. Feed the cable assembly through the passenger floor pan opening.





2. Install the grommet flush with the floor opening.





3. Install the rear floor right side elbow duct.
4. Position and install the passenger side carpet. Refer to Carpet Replacement - Front in Body and Frame.





5. Install the cables into the underhood bracket.





6. Connect the shift cable to the shift actuator.





7. Connect the cables to the shifter.





8. Press down on the locking tabs.
9. Install the console. Refer to Console Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Warning Indicators.
10. Connect the battery.

Shift Control

Removal Procedure





1. Remove the shift cables from the shifter assembly. Refer to Shift Cables.
2. Disconnect the shift interlock cable.





3. Remove the 2 front mounting bolts.





4. Remove the 2 rear mounting bolts and the shifter.

Installation Procedure





1. Position the shifter on the studs and install the front 2 nuts.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.





2. Install the 2 rear bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 25 Nm 18 ft. lbs.
3. Install the shift cables. Refer to Shift Cables.
4. Install the console. Refer to Console Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Warning Indicators.
