Subject:
Rear Suspension Spring Squeak/Creak (Lubricate Lower Spring Seat)
Models:
2000 Chevrolet Malibu
2000 Oldsmobile Alero
2000 Pontiac Grand Am
Condition
Some customers may comment on a squeak/creak noise coming from the rear of the vehicle when driving over an irregular/rough road surface at low speeds.
Cause
Slight surface irregularities on the mating surfaces of the rear springs and those on the lower spring seats of the rear strut assemblies may result in subtle movement. This may cause a squeak/creak noise when the rear suspension is subjected to certain types of road conditions. As component surfaces conform to one another, the noise typically goes away and is not apparent after a few hundred kilometers/miles of vehicle operation.
Correction
With the rear strut assemblies fully extended, lubricate the lower spring seats with GM Goodwrench(TM) Super Lube (P/N 12346241), or equivalent, between points indicated in the illustration.
