Transmission Replacement

Removal Procedure





1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure in Starting and Charging.
2. Remove the air cleaner housing and duct assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Powertrain Management.
3. Remove the air cleaner mounting bracket. Refer to Mounting Bracket Replacement - Air Cleaner in Body and Frame.
4. Disconnect the clutch slave cylinder line from the slave cylinder.





5. Remove the clutch slave cylinder line bracket bolt and position the line and bracket out of the way.





6. Disconnect the shifter cables from the transmission shift control levers.





7. Remove the cable bracket bolt and the bracket.





8. Disconnect the VSS electrical connector and position the harness out of the way.





9. Disconnect the backup lamp switch electrical connector and position the harness out of the way.
10. Remove the starter. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Starting and Charging.
11. Tie the radiator to the upper hood latch panel.
12. Install the engine support fixture. Refer to the mounting procedures supplied with the tool.





13. Remove the two remaining upper transaxle mounting bolts.
14. Raise and support the vehicle.
15. Remove the lower closeout panel retainers.
16. Remove the lower closeout panel from the radiator support.
17. Remove the front wheels and tires. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Steering and Suspension.
18. Remove both of the front splash shields. Refer to Splash Shield Replacement - Wheelhouse in Body and Frame.
19. Remove the lower radiator support. Refer to Radiator Support Replacement in Collision Repair.





20. Disconnect the front wheel speed sensors.





21. Unroute the wheel speed sensor wire harness and position the harness out of the way.
22. Separate both front ball joints. Refer to Lower Ball Joint Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
23. Separate both outer tie rod ends from the front steering knuckles. Refer to Tie Rod End Replacement - Outer in Steering and Suspension.
24. Remove both front stabilizer shaft links. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement in Steering and Suspension.





25. Remove the front transmission mount lower frame bolts.





26. Remove the side transaxle mount to frame nuts.





27. Remove the nut from the rear transaxle mount to frame stud.





28. Remove the bolt from the rear transaxle mount to frame.
29. Remove the right front brake hose from the vehicle. Refer to Brake Hose Replacement - Front in Brakes and Traction Control.
30. Lower the vehicle until the front suspension crossmember contacts the frame support table.
31. Remove the front suspension crossmember attaching bolts. Refer to Front Suspension Crossmember Replacement (Manual Transmission) in Steering and Suspension.
32. Raise the vehicle slightly off of the Front suspension crossmember.
33. Remove the rack and pinion thru bolts.
34. Raise the vehicle off of the front suspension crossmember.
35. Remove the transaxle front mount from the transaxle. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement- Front.
36. Remove the transaxle rear mount from the transaxle. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement- Rear.
37. Remove the wheel driveshafts from the vehicle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shafts Replacement.
38. Lower the engine and transaxle assembly with the engine support fixture enough to clear the left side inner body panel.





39. Remove the lower transaxle mounting bolts at the front of the vehicle.





40. Remove the lower transaxle mounting bolts.





41. Support and remove the transaxle from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure





1. Support and raise the transaxle into the vehicle.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.





2. Install the lower transaxle mounting bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the lower transaxle mounting bolts to 100 Nm (74 ft. lbs.)





3. Install the lower transaxle mounting bolts at the front of the vehicle.
Tighten
Tighten the lower transaxle mounting bolts to 100 Nm (74 ft. lbs.).
4. Raise the engine and transaxle assembly with the engine support fixture into position.
5. Install the wheel driveshafts to the vehicle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shafts Replacement.
6. Install the transaxle front mount to the transaxle. Transmission Mount Replacement- Front.
7. Install the transaxle rear mount to the transaxle. Transmission Mount Replacement- Rear.
8. Lower the vehicle lightly on to the front suspension crossmember.
9. Install the rack and pinion thru bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the rack and pinion thru bolts to 110 Nm (81 ft. lbs.).
10. Lower the vehicle the rest of the way onto the front suspension crossmember.
11. Install the front suspension crossmember attaching bolts. Refer to Front Suspension Crossmember Replacement (Manual/Transmission) in Steering and Suspension.
Tighten
^ Tighten the front suspension crossmember attaching rear bolts to 245 Nm (180 ft. lbs.).
^ Tighten the front suspension crossmember attaching front bolts to 115 Nm (84 ft. lbs.).
12. Raise the vehicle off of the frame support table.
13. Install the right front brake hose. Refer to Brake Hose Replacement - Front in Brakes and Traction Control.





14. Install the rear transaxle mount to frame bolt.
Tighten
Tighten the rear transaxle mount to frame bolt to 110 Nm (81 ft. lbs.).





15. Install the nut to the rear transaxle mount to frame stud.
Tighten
Tighten the nut to 90 Nm (66 ft. lbs.).





16. Install the side transaxle mount to frame nuts.
Tighten
Tighten the side transaxle mount to frame nuts to 58 Nm (43 ft. lbs.).





17. Install the front transmission mount lower frame bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the front transmission mount lower frame bolts to 115 Nm (84 ft. lbs.).
18. Install both front stabilizer shaft links. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
19. Assemble both outer tie rod ends to the front steering knuckles. Refer to Tie Rod End Replacement - Outer in Steering.
20. Assemble both front ball joints. Refer to Lower Ball Joint Replacement in Steering and Suspension.





21. Route the wheel speed sensor wire harness to the speed sensor.





22. Connect the wheel speed sensor electrical connectors.
23. Install the lower radiator support. Refer to Radiator Support Replacement.
24. Install both of the front splash shields. Refer to Splash Shield Replacement - Wheelhouse in Body and Frame.
25. Install the front wheels and tires. Refer to Splash Shield Replacement - Wheelhouse in Steering and Suspension.
26. Install the lower closeout panel to the radiator support.
27. Install the lower closeout panel retainers. Ensure that the retainers are locked into position.
28. Lower the vehicle.





29. Install the two upper transaxle mounting bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the upper transaxle mounting bolts to
30. Remove the engine support fixture.
31. Untie the radiator from the upper hood latch panel.
32. Install the starter. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Starting and Charging.





33. Connect the backup lamp switch electrical connector.





34. Connect the VSS electrical connector.





35. Connect the shifter cables to the transmission shift control levers.





36. Install the clutch slave cylinder line and bracket bolt.





37. Connect the clutch slave cylinder line to the slave cylinder.
38. Install the air cleaner mounting bracket. Refer to Mounting Bracket Replacement - Air Cleaner in Body and Frame.
39. Install the air cleaner housing and duct assembly. Refer Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Powertrain Management.
40. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure in Starting and Charging.
