Cylinder Head Replacement - Left

This bulletin is being revised to include a Notice advising that the cylinder head bolts are NOT TO BE RE-USED. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 02-06-01-003A.

Removal Procedure

Notice: Refer to Engine Emission Notice in Service Precautions.





1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Drain the engine coolant from the cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Cooling System.
3. Drain the engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement.
4. Lower the vehicle.
5. Remove the upper intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Removal (Upper) or Intake Manifold Removal (Lower).
6. Remove the lower intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Removal (Upper) or Intake Manifold Removal (Lower).
7. Remove the valve rocker arms and pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement.
8. Remove the exhaust crossover pipe. Refer to Exhaust Crossover Pipe Replacement.
9. Remove the right engine mount strut bracket. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Bracket Replacement (Upper Radiator Support) or Engine Mount Strut Bracket Replacement (Left) or Engine Mount Strut Bracket Replacement (Right).
10. Remove the oil level indicator tube. Refer to Oil Level Indicator and Tube Replacement.
11. Remove the left spark plug wires from the spark plugs. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Harness Replacement.
12. Remove the left spark plugs. Refer to Spark Plug Replacement.
13. Remove the left exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement (Left) or Exhaust Manifold Replacement (Right).
14. Remove the left cylinder head bolts.
15. Remove the left cylinder head.





16. Remove the left cylinder head gasket.
17. Clean the following areas:
^ The gasket sealing surfaces on the cylinder head, cylinder block, and intake manifolds.
^ The cylinder block bolt threads.
^ The cylinder head bolts.

Installation Procedure

- J 36660-A Electronic Torque Angle Meter

Notice: Refer to Engine Emission Notice in Service Precautions.





1. Install a new left cylinder head gasket.





2. Install the left cylinder head over the locator pins and over the gasket.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

Notice: This component uses torque-to-yield bolts. When servicing this component, do not re-use the bolts. New torque-to-yield bolts must be installed. Re-using used torque-to-yield bolts will not provide proper bolt torque and clamp load. Failure to install NEW torque-to-yield bolts may lead to engine damage.





3. Install the NEW cylinder head bolts.
- Tighten the NEW cylinder head bolts to 60 Nm (44 lb ft) in the order shown. Use the J 36660-A torque angle meter in order to rotate the cylinder head bolts an additional 95 degrees.

4. Install the left exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement (Left) or Exhaust Manifold Replacement (Right).
5. Install the left spark plugs. Refer to Spark Plug Replacement.
6. Install the left spark plug wires to the spark plugs. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Harness Replacement.
7. Install the oil level indicator tube. Refer to Oil Level Indicator and Tube Replacement.
8. Install the right engine mount strut bracket. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Bracket Replacement (Upper Radiator Support) or Engine Mount Strut Bracket Replacement (Left) or Engine Mount Strut Bracket Replacement (Right).
9. Install the exhaust crossover pipe. Refer to Exhaust Crossover Pipe Replacement.
10. Install the valve rocker arms and pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement.
11. Install the lower intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Removal (Upper) or Intake Manifold Removal (Lower).
12. Install the upper intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Removal (Upper) or Intake Manifold Removal (Lower).
13. Fill the engine with new engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement.
14. Fill the cooling system with engine coolant. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Cooling System.
