Oil Pan: Service and Repair
Removal Procedure^ Tools Required
- J 28467-90A Engine Support Adapters
- J 28467-B Universal Engine Support Fixture
- J 36462-A Engine Support Adapter Leg Set
- J 39505 Torque Wrench Adapter
1. Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure.
2. Remove the engine mount struts from the engine. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Bracket Replacement (Upper Radiator Support) or Engine Mount Strut Bracket Replacement (Left) Engine Mount Strut Bracket Replacement (Right).
3. Remove the A/C compressor mounting bolts and set the compressor aside. Refer to Compressor Replacement in Heating and Air Conditioning.
4. Install the J28467-B, the J28467-90A and the J 36462-A. Refer to Engine Support Fixture.
5. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
6. Remove the three-way catalytic converter pipe from the right exhaust manifold. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement.
7. Drain the engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement.
8. Remove the oil level sensor wiring harness connection.
9. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement.
10. Remove the transaxle brace from the oil pan. Refer to Automatic Transmission Brace Replacement in Transmission and Drivetrain.
11. Remove the transaxle mount lower nuts. Refer to Automatic Transmission Mount Replacement in Transmission and Drivetrain.
12. Remove the engine mount lower nuts. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement.
13. Lower the Vehicle.
14. Raise the engine using the engine support fixture in order to gain access for oil pan removal.
15. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
16. Remove the engine mount bracket with the engine mount from the oil pan. Refer to Engine Mount Bracket Replacement.
17. Remove the right oil pan side bolts. Use the J 39505.
18. Remove the left oil pan side bolts.
19. Remove the oil pan retaining bolts.
20. Remove the oil pan.
21. Remove the oil pan gasket.
22. Clean the oil pan and the engine block gasket surface.
Installation Procedure

1. Apply a small amount of sealer GM P/N 1234579 or equivalent on either side of the rear main bearing cap, where the seal surface on the cap meets the cylinder block (1). Press sealant into the gap with putty knife.
2. Install the oil pan gasket.
3. Install left the oil pan.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
4. Install the oil pan retaining bolts.
^ Tighten the oil pan retaining bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
5. Install the oil pan side bolts.
^ Tighten the oil pan side bolts to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
6. Install the right oil pan side bolts. Use the J 39505
^ Tighten the oil pan side bolts to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
7. Install the engine mount bracket with the engine mount to oil pan. Refer to Engine Mount Bracket Replacement.
8. Lower the engine using the engine support fixture.
9. Install the engine mount lower nuts. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement.
10. Install the transaxle mount lower nuts. Refer to Automatic Transmission Mount Replacement in Transmission and Drivetrain.
11. Install the transaxle brace to the oil pan. Refer to Automatic Transmission Brace Replacement in Transmission and Drivetrain.
12. Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement.
13. Install the oil level sensor wiring harness connection.
14. Connect the three-way catalytic converter pipe to the right exhaust manifold. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement.
15. Lower the vehicle.
16. Remove the J 28467-B, J 28467-90A, and the J36462-A.
17. Install the A/C compressor. Refer to Compressor Replacement in Heating and Air Conditioning.
18. Install the engine mount struts to the engine. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Bracket Replacement (Upper Radiator Support) or Engine Mount Strut Bracket Replacement (Left) or Engine Mount Strut Bracket Replacement (Right).
19. Fill the engine with oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement.
20. Connect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure.
