Removal and Replacement
Removal Procedure
NOTE: This procedure refers to components found on an automatic transmission, the manufacture does not give a seperate procedure for manual transmission.
Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the hood. Refer to Hood Replacement.
3. Drain the engine coolant. Refer to Draining and Pilling Cooling System in Cooling System.
4. Evaporate and recover the refrigerant. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Heating and Air Conditioning.
5. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement.
6. Disconnect the brake booster vacuum line at the intake manifold.
7. Remove the fuel injector rail cover. Refer to Fuel Rail Assembly Replacement.
Caution: In order to avoid possible injury or vehicle damage, always replace the accelerator control cable with a NEW cable whenever you remove the engine from the vehicle.
In order to avoid cruise control cable damage, position the cable out of the way while you remove or install the engine. Do not pry or lean against the cruise control cable and do not kink the cable. You must replace a damaged cable.
8. Remove the accelerator and the cruise control cables from the cable bracket. Refer to Accelerator Controls Cable Bracket Replacement.
9. Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the underhood engine components. Refer to Harness Routing Views.
10. Remove the cruise control module. Refer to Cruise Control Module Replacement.
11. Disconnect the A/C line from the accumulator. Refer to Accumulator Replacement in Heating and Air Conditioning.
12. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement.
13. Remove the surge tank. Refer to Surge Tank Replacement in Cooling System.
14. Remove the upper and lower radiator hoses. Refer to Radiator Hose Replacement in Cooling System.
15. Remove the fuel feed lines at the engine. Refer to Fuel Hose/Pipes Replacement (Engine Compartment).
16. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
17. Remove the coolant pipe assembly. Refer to Coolant Pipe Replacement - Intake in Cooling System.
18. Remove the right side wheel and tire assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
19. Remove the right side splash shield. Refer to Splash Shield Replacement - Wheelhouse.
20. Remove the engine mount strut. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement.
21. Remove the flywheel dust cover.
22. Remove the exhaust pipe and hanger from the exhaust manifold. Refer to Intermediate Pipe Replacement (2.4 L).
23. Remove the starter. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement.
24. Remove and support the A/C compressor. Refer to Compressor Replacement in Heating and Air Conditioning.
25. Drain the engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement.
26. Remove the torque converter bolts.
27. Remove the transmission - to - engine support brace.
28. Remove the lower transmission - to - engine bolts.
29. Lower the vehicle.
30. Support the transmission with a suitable jack.
31. Install the engine lifting device to the engine lifting eyes.
32. Remove the upper front engine mount.
33. Remove the remaining transmission -to -engine bolts.
34. Separate the engine from the transmission and lift the engine from the vehicle.
Installation Procedure
1. Position the engine in the vehicle.
2. Hand-tighten the upper transmission to engine bolts.
3. Install the front upper engine mount.
4. Remove the engine lifting device from the lifting eyes.
5. Remove the jack supporting the transmission.
6. Raise the vehicle.
7. Install the lower transmission - to - engine bolts
8. Install the lower transmission - to - engine brace.
9. Install the torque converter bolts.
10. Install the A/C compressor. Refer to Compressor Replacement in Heating and Air Conditioning.
11. Install the starter. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement.
12. Install the exhaust pipe and hanger to the exhaust manifold. Refer to Intermediate Pipe Replacement (2.4 L).
13. Install the flywheel dust cover.
14. Install the engine mount strut. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement.
15. Install the right side splash shield. Refer to Splash Shield Replacement - Wheelhouse.
16. Install the right side wheel and tire assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
17. Install the coolant pipe assembly. Refer to Coolant Pipe Replacement - Intake in Cooling System.
18. Lower the vehicle.
19. Install the fuel feed lines at the engine. Refer to Fuel Hose/Pipes Replacement (Engine Compartment).
20. Connect the upper and lower radiator hoses. Refer to Radiator Hose Replacement (2.4 L) in Cooling System.
21. Install the surge tank. Refer to Surge Tank Replacement in Cooling System.
22. Install the fuel rail cover. Refer to Fuel Hose/Pipes Replacement (Engine Compartment).
23. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement.
24. Connect the A/C line to the accumulator. Refer to Accumulator Replacement in Heating and Air Conditioning.
25. Install the cruise control module. Refer to Cruise Control Module Replacement.
26. Install the engine wiring harness. Refer to Harness Routing Views.

27. Install the accelerator and the cruise control cable. Refer to Accelerator Controls Cable Bracket Replacement.
28. Connect the brake booster vacuum line at the manifold.
29. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement.
30. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Cooling System.
31. Evacuate and recharge the A/C system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging in Heating and Air Conditioning.
32. Install the hood. Refer to Hood Replacement.
33. Connect the battery cable.
34. Start the engine and check for leaks.
35. Check all of the fluid levels.
