Tie Rod: Service and Repair
Removal Procedure- Tools Required
- J 24319-B Universal Steering Linkage Puller
Important: Use the J 24319-B in order to separate all the tie rods.
1. Remove the front tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
2. Remove the nut (5) from the outer tie rod ball stud (4).
3. Loosen the jam nut (2).
4. Use the J24319-B in order to remove the outer tie rod ball stud from the steering knuckle.
5. Remove the tie rod end (4) from the shaft (1).
6. Inspect the shaft (1) for bending or damaged threads.
7. Clean the tapered surface of the steering knuckle (6).
Installation Procedure
1. Lubricate the tie rod threads with chassis lubricant.
2. Install the tie rod end (3) to the shaft (1).
3. Install the outer tie rod ball stud (4) to the steering knuckle (6).
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
4. Install the new prevailing torque nut (5) to the outer tie rod ball stud (4).
- Tighten the new prevailing torque nut to 45 Nm (33 ft. lbs.).
5. Install the front tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
6. Adjust the front toe. Refer to Measuring Wheel Alignment (Front).
7. Tighten the jam nut (2).
- Tighten the jam nut to 68 Nm (50 ft. lbs.).
