129. Torque Converter Inspection
Tools Required- J 26900-13 Magnetic Indicator Base
- J 35138 Torque Converter End Play Checking Tool
- J 8001 Dial Indicator Set
1. Position the torque converter (1) on the bench with the flywheel lugs facing down.
2. Install J 26900-13, J 35138, and J 8001 onto the converter.
3. Set the dial indicator to 0.
4. Lift J 35138 and note the dial indicator reading:
- The torque converter end play should be 0.5 mm (0.020 inch) or less.
- Replace the converter if the end play is too high
5. Repair the torque converter if the bolt hole threads are stripped.
6. Inspect the converter for the following conditions. Replace the converter if any of these conditions are discovered:
- Overheating: the converter will be blue in color
- Leaking at the weld areas
- A damaged pilot
- Evidence of metal particles in the converter, the oil cooler, or the cooler pipes
- A damaged converter stator, pump, or turbine
- A damaged or worn converter bushing
- Contaminated fluid due to engine coolant
