Removal Procedure^ Tools Required
- J 28467-360 Engine Support Fixture
- J 35944-A Oil Cooler Flushing Tool
Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution In Service Precautions.
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
3. Remove the shift linkage from the transmission.
4. Disconnect the wiring connection from the transmission.
5. Install the J28467-360 to the transmission.
6. Remove the upper transmission to engine bolts.
7. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
8. Remove both of the tire and wheel assemblies.
9. Remove the splash shields.
10. Remove the front suspension crossmember.
11. Remove the engine mount strut.
12. Remove both of the drive axles from the transmission and the support.
13. Remove the engine to transmission brace.
14. Remove the shift cable bracket.
15. Remove the starter.
16. Remove the torque converter and the torque converter bolts.
17. Remove the transmission cooler pipes.
18. Remove the brake hose bracket to body.
19. Remove the transmission mount to body bolts.
20. Lower the vehicle.
Caution: Refer to Vehicle Lifting Caution In Service Precautions.
21. Lower the transmission with the engine support fixture enough to remove the transmission.
22. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
23. Support the transmission.
24. Remove the transmission to engine bolts.
24. Remove the transmission.
25. Flush the transmission cooler and the lines with the J 35944-A, or equivalent, whenever the transmission has been removed for overhaul or replacement.
Installation Procedure

- J 128467-360 Engine Support Fixture
1. Place a thin film of chassis grease GM P/N 1051344, or the equivalent, on the torque converter pilot hub.
2. Ensure that the torque converter is properly seated in the oil pump.
3. Position the transmission in the vehicle.
4. Install the lower transmission to engine bolts.
5. Lower the vehicle.
6. Use the J23467-360 in order to raise the transmission.
Caution: Refer to Vehicle Lifting Caution In Service Precautions.
7. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
8. Install the transmission mount to body bolts.
9. Install the brake hose bracket to body.
10. Install the transmission cooler pipes.
11. Install the torque converter to flywheel bolts.
12. Install the starter.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
13. Install the shift cable bracket.
^ Tighten the bolt to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
^ Tighten the nut to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
14. Install the engine to transmission brace.
15. Install both of the drive axles.
16. Install the front suspension crossmember.
17. Install the engine mount strut to the suspension strut.
18. Install the splash shields.
19. Install both of the tire and wheel assemblies.
20. Lower the vehicle.
21. Install the upper transmission to engine bolts.
^ Tighten all of the bolts to 90 Nm (66 ft. lbs.).
22. Remove the J 23467-360 from the transmission.
23. Connect the wiring connections to the transmission.
24. Install the shift linkage to the transmission.
25. Install the air cleaner assembly.
26. Connect the negative battery cable.
27. Fill the transmission with Dexron(r) III to the correct capacity.
28. Inspect the transmission oil level.
29. Apply the brakes. Start the engine. Shift the transmission from R (Reverse) to D (Drive).
30. Install the transmission mount pipe expansion bolt.
