^ Tools Required
- J8614-01 Pinion Flange Remover and Installer
- J23911 Pinion Oil Seal Installer

Removal Procedure
1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Remove the propeller shaft.

3. In order to maintain the correct drive pinion gear inner and outer bearing preload, mark the position of the following components before disassembly:
^ The drive pinion gear yoke (1)
^ The drive pinion gear
^ The drive pinion gear nut
4. Place a drain pan under the rear axle pinion yoke.
5. Install the J8614-01 to the pinion flange.
6. Using the J8614-01 in order to hold the pinion flange stationary, remove the following components:
^ The drive pinion gear nut
^ The drive pinion gear washer

7. With the J8614-01 still installed to the pinion flange, use the forcing screw in order to remove the drive pinion gear yoke (1).

Important: Do not damage the rear axle housing when removing the drive pinion gear seal.

8. Use a blunt chisel in order to drive the drive pinion gear seal out of the rear axle housing.
9. Inspect the sealing surface of the drive pinion yoke for the following conditions:
^ Tool marks
^ Nicks
^ Grooves from the drive pinion oil seal

10. If the drive pinion gear yoke is damaged or grooved, replace the drive pinion gear yoke.
11. Inspect the housing bore for burrs.
Remove any burrs that might cause leaks around the Outer Diameter (OD) of the drive pinion gear seal.

Installation Procedure

1. Use the J23911 in order to install a new drive pinion gear oil seal (1).
2. Apply chassis lubricant (grease) to the following components:
^ The outside diameter of the drive pinion gear yoke
^ The sealing lip of the new drive pinion gear oil seal (1)

3. Install the drive pinion gear yoke.
4. Install the following components:
^ The drive pinion gear washer
^ The drive pinion gear nut
5. Hand tighten the drive pinion gear nut.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

6. Using the J8614-01 in order to hold the drive pinion gear yoke stationary, tighten the drive pinion gear nut to the position that was marked.
^ Tighten the drive pinion gear nut to 1.59 mm (1/16 inch) beyond the alignment mark.
7. Remove the tool.
8. Install the propeller shaft.
9. Inspect the rear axle lubricant level.
10. Lower the vehicle.
11. Inspect for correct operation of the rear axle.
