Rear Axle ReplacementRemoval Procedure
1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Remove the rear tire and wheels assemblies.
3. Remove the propeller shaft.
4. Remove the rear stabilizer shaft.
5. Use an adjustable lifting device in order to support the rear axle housing.
6. Remove the tie rod-to-rear axle bolt (1) and nut.
7. Remove the rear brake (center) hose from the rear brake hose junction block.
8. Remove the rear springs.
9. Disconnect the parking brake cables from the rear axle housing and the park brake actuators.
10. Disconnect the electrical connector(s) from the rear wheel speed sensor(s).
11. Remove the rear axle torque arm.
12. Remove the lower control arm-to-rear axle bolts (5), washers (4), and nuts (2).
13. With the aid of a helper, remove the rear axle housing.
Installation Procedure
1. With the aid of a helper, install the rear axle housing.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
2. Install the lower control arm-to-rear axle baits (5), washers (4), and nuts (2).
^ Tighten the lower control arm-to-rear axle bolts to 118 Nm (87 ft. lbs.)
3. Install the rear axle torque.
4. Connect the electrical connector(s) to the rear wheel speed sensor(s).
5. Connect the parking brake cables to the rear axle housing and the park brake actuators.
6. Install the rear springs.
7. Install the rear brake (center) hose to the rear brake hose junction block.
8. Install the rear tie rod-to-axle bolt (1) and nut.
^ Tighten the rear tie rod-to-axle bolt to 118 Nm (87 ft. lbs.)
9. Remove the adjustable lifting device from the rear axle housing.
10. Install the rear stabilizer shaft.
11. Install the propeller shaft.
12. Bleed the brake system.
13. Install the rear fire and wheels assemblies.
14. Inspect the rear axle lubricant level.
15. Lower the vehicle.
16. Road test the vehicle in order to ensure proper rear axle operation.
