Transmission Replacement

^ Tools Required
- J 28467-A Engine Support Fixture
- J 28467-90 Engine Support Adapter
- J 36462 Engine Support Adapter Leg Set
- J 35944-A Oil Cooler and Line Flusher

Removal Procedure





1. Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable.
2. Remove the throttle body air inlet duct.
3. Install the J28467-90.
4. Install the J28467-A.
5. Install the J36462.
6. Remove the engine mount struts.
7. Disconnect the wiring harness connectors from the transaxle and remove the wiring harness grounds.
8. Remove the automatic transaxle range selector cable from the PNP switch.
9. Remove the automatic transaxle range selector cable bracket with cable from transaxle.
10. Remove the PNP switch.
11. Remove the fluid filler tube.
12. Remove the power steering gear to frame retaining bolts.
13. Remove the upper transaxle bolts (3, 4 and 5) and stud (2).
14. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
15. Remove the front tires and wheels.
16. Remove the engine splash shields.
17. Remove both tie rod ends from the steering knuckles.
18. Remove the power steering gear from the frame.
19. Use wire to secure the power steering gear to the vehicle.
20. Remove the power steering cooler line clamps from the frame.
21. Remove the engine mount lower nuts.
22. Remove the lower ball joints from the lower control arms.
23. Remove the torque converter cover.
24. Remove the starter motor.





25. Remove the torque converter bolts.
26. Drain the transaxle fluid.
27. Remove the transaxle oil cooler hoses from the transaxle.
28. Disconnect the drive axles from the transaxle.
29. Secure the drive axles to the steering knuckle and struts.
30. Disconnect the wheel speed sensors wiring harness connectors.
31. Use the transaxle table to support the transaxle and frame.
32. Remove the transaxle brace.





33. Remove the lower transaxle bolt (6) and stud (1).
34. Remove the frame to body bolts.
35. Lower the frame from the vehicle with transaxle suitably supported.
36. Lower the transaxle.
37. Refer to Service and Repair for the overhaul procedure.
38. Use the J 35944-A or equivalent to flush the following components whenever the transaxle is removed for overhaul or whenever the torque converter pump or the case is replaced:
^ Flush the transaxle oil cooler(s).
^ Flush the hoses.
^ Flush the pipes.

Installation Procedure





1. Install the transaxle to the frame on the transaxle table.
2. Raise the transaxle and frame assembly to the vehicle.
3. Install the frame to body bolts.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

4. Install the lower transaxle bolt (6) and stud (1).
^ Tighten the lower transaxle to engine and engine to transaxle bolts to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).
5. Install the transaxle brace.
6. Remove the transaxle table.
7. Connect the wheel speed sensors wiring harness connectors.
8. Connect the drive axles to the transaxle.
9. Install the transaxle oil cooler hoses to the transaxle.





10. Install the torque converter bolts.
^ Tighten the torque converter bolts to 63 Nm (46 ft. lbs.).
11. Install the starter motor.
12. Install the torque converter cover.
13. Install the lower ball joints to the lower control arms.
14. Install the engine mount lower nuts.
15. Install the power steering cooler line clamps to the frame.
16. Install the power steering gear to the frame.
17. Install both the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles.
18. Install the engine splash shields.
19. Install the front tires and wheels.
20. Install the fluid filler tube.
21. Remove the vehicle support.
22. Lower the vehicle.





23. Install the upper transaxle bolts (3, 4 and 5) and stud (2). and install the wiring harness grounds.
^ Tighten the upper transaxle bolts and stud to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).
24. Install the PNP switch.
25. Install the automatic transaxle range selector cable bracket with cable to transaxle.
26. Install the automatic transaxle range selector cable to the PNP switch.
27. Install the wiring harness connectors to the transaxle.
28. Install the engine mount struts.
29. Remove the J 36462.
30. Remove the J28467-A.
31. Remove the J28467-90.
32. Install the throttle body air inlet duct.
33. Connect the battery ground (negative) cable.
34. Adjust the toe-in, if required.

Notice: Do NOT overfill the transaxle. The overfilling of the transaxle causes foaming, loss of fluid, shift complaints and possible damage to the transaxle.

35. Adjust the fluid level.
36. Use the J 35944-A or equivalent to flush the following components whenever the transaxle is removed for overhaul or whenever the torque converter pump or the case is replaced:
^ Flush the transaxle oil cooler(s).
^ Flush the hoses.
^ Flush the pipes.
37. Inspect for fluid leaks.
