TECHNICAL

Subject:
Air Rush/Moan Noise From Rear Compartment Lid Area (Install Sealer)

Models:
1999-2002 Oldsmobile Alero
1999-2002 Pontiac Grand Am

Condition

Some customers may comment on an air rush/moan type noise from the rear compartment lid area of the vehicle.

Cause

This condition may be caused by a gap between the spoiler and the rear compartment lid where the spoiler attaches to the lid.

Correction

Remove the spoiler. Refer to Spoiler Replacement - Rear in the Body Rear End sub-section of the Service Manual.

After the rear spoiler is removed, replace the spoiler seal gasket, which is a two-way taped type of gasket and seal.

Apply a bead of 3M(R) Strip-Calk, P/N 08578 (black), or equivalent, around the perimeter of the gasket seal. Refer to the illustration for the placement of the strip caulk (Pontiac Grand AM shown, Oldsmobile Alero similar).

Important:
Use enough caulk to correct the condition without compromising the appearance and proper mounting. Clean off any excess.
