Timing Chain and Sprocket Replacement (On Vehicle Service)

Camshaft Timing Chain and Sprocket Replacement

Tools Required

- J 24420-C Crankcase Gear Puller
- J 29113 Crankshaft Sprocket Installer

Removal Procedure

1. Remove the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement Service and Repair.
2. Place the #1 piston at top dead center (#4 firing position).

3. Align the mark on the camshaft sprocket (4) with the timing mark on the bottom of the timing chain dampener (1).

4. Remove the camshaft sprocket bolt.
5. Remove the camshaft sprocket.
6. Remove the timing chain.

7. Remove timing chain dampener.

Important: If the sprocket does not remove easily, lightly knock the lower edge of the sprocket using a plastic mallet in order to dislodge the sprocket.

8. Remove the crankshaft sprocket using the J 24420-C.

Installation Procedure

1. Install the crankshaft sprocket using the J 29113.
2. Apply prelude GM P/N United States 1052365, GM P/N Canada 992869 to the crankshaft sprocket thrust surface.

3. Install the timing chain dampener.

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

4. Install the timing chain dampener bolts.

Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 21 Nm (15 lb ft).

5. Align the crankshaft timing mark (2) to the timing mark on the bottom of the timing chain dampener (1).
6. Hold the camshaft sprocket with the timing chain hanging down.
7. Install the timing chain to the crankshaft gear.
8. Align the timing mark on the camshaft gear (4) with the timing mark on top of the timing chain dampener (3).

9. Align the dowel in the camshaft with the dowel hole in the camshaft sprocket.
10. Draw the camshaft sprocket onto the camshaft using the mounting bolt.
11. Coat the crankshaft and the camshaft sprockets with engine oil.

Tighten
Tighten the camshaft sprocket bolt to 140 Nm (103 lb ft).

12. Install the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement Service and Repair.
