Service Engine Soon (SES) Lamp Illuminated, DTC P0440 Set
(Replace EVAP Purge Line and Rotate Brake Booster Vacuum Hose Clamp)
Models: 2002 Oldsmobile Alero
2002 Pontiac Grand Am
with 3.4L Engine (VIN E - RPO LA1)
Condition
Some customers may comment that the Service Engine Soon (SES) lamp is illuminated. Upon investigation, the technician may find that DTC P0440 has been set.
Cause
The underhood EVAP plastic purge line may contact the brake booster vacuum hose clamp tabs and over time, may rub through resulting in a leak.
Correction
Replace the EVAP plastic purge line and rotate brake booster vacuum hose clamp tabs away from the line using the procedure listed below.
1. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
2. Slide the underhood fuse/relay center off the mounting bracket for access.
3. Disconnect the line from the EVAP solenoid.
4. Disconnect the line from the steel pipe.
5. Remove the line from the vehicle.
6. Install the new line into position.
7. Connect the new line to the steel pipe.
8. Connect the new line to the EVAP solenoid.
9. Install the underhood fuse/relay center.
10. Install the air cleaner assembly.
11. Rotate the brake booster vacuum hose clamp 180 degrees so that the tabs face away from the purge line.
12. In addition to rotating the clamp, reroute the purge line under the brake booster vacuum hose fitting and away from the clamp.
