File In Section: 08 - Body and Accessories

Bulletin No.: 01-08-58-005

Date: December, 2001

TECHNICAL

Subject:
"Wet Road Sizzle" Noise From Rear of Vehicle
(Install Wheelhouse Liners)

Models:
2000-2002 Chevrolet Cavalier (Coupes Only)
2000-2002 Pontiac Sunfire (Coupes Only)

Condition

Some customers may comment that road noise can be heard from the rear of the vehicle primarily on wet road surfaces.

Cause

This condition may be caused by noise that is transmitted into the passenger compartment from the rear wheelhouse area.

Correction

Install a liner in both rear wheelhouse openings following the procedure below:

1. Raise the vehicle on a suitable hoist. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information (SI2000 Document ID # 760089).

2. Remove both rear tire and wheel assemblies.

3. On Pontiac vehicles, remove the screw from the rocker panel at the front of the wheelhouse opening. The wheelhouse liner fits between the rocker panel and the quarter panel sheet metal at this location. This screw is not present on Chevrolet vehicles.

4. Hold the wheelhouse liner (1) in place and drill four 3/32 inch holes through the dimples (3) in the wheelhouse liner and through the quarter panel sheet metal. On Pontiac vehicles, only three holes are required since the rocker molding screw (2) will be reused.

5. Coat the newly drilled holes with anti-corrosion compound.

6. On Chevrolet vehicles, install the wheelhouse liner using four new screws, P/N 10122060. On Pontiac vehicles, install the wheelhouse liner using three new screws and the original rocker panel screw removed earlier. Please note that the screws are sold in packages of 10.

7. Repeat the installation procedure for the opposite side.

8. Install both tire and wheel assemblies.

Tighten

Tighten the lug nuts to 140 N.m (100 lb ft).

9. Lower the vehicle.
