Steering Column Tilt Head Housing Replacement

Tools Required
^ J23653-SIR Steering Column Lock Plate Compressor
^ J42137 Steering Column Lock Plate Compressor Adapter

Removal Procedure





Caution: Refer to SIR Caution in Service Precautions.

1. Disable the SIR system.
2. Remove the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only.
3. Remove the windshield wiper and washer switch.
4. Slide the wiper/washer switch bracket off of the steering column shaft assembly.

Important: Do not remove the wire harness straps unless necessary.

5. Remove the SIR coil.





6. Remove and dispose of the bearing retainer using J23653-SIR and J42137.
7. Remove J23653-SM and J42137 from the steering shaft assembly.





8. Remove the cam orientation plate (1).
9. Remove the turn signal cancel cam assembly (2).
10. Remove the upper bearing spring (3).
11. Remove the upper bearing inner race seat (4).
12. Remove the inner race (5).
13. Remove the lower bearing steering shaft assembly.
14. Remove the tilt head assembly from the steering shaft assembly.

Installation Procedure





1. Install the tilt head assembly to the steering shaft assembly.
2. Install the lower bearing and steering shaft assembly.
3. Install the inner race (5).
4. Install the upper bearing inner race seat (4).
5. Install the upper bearing spring (3).
6. Lubricate the turn signal cancel cam assembly (2) with GM P/N 12377900 (Canadian P/N 10953529).

Important: The electrical contact of the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly must rest on the turn signal cancel cam assembly.

7. Install the turn signal cancel cam assembly (2).
8. Install the cam orientation plate (1).





9. Install the new bearing retainer using J23653-SIR and J42137.
10. Remove J23653-SIR and J42137 from the steering shaft assembly.
11. Install the SIR coil.

Important: Press the switch mounting bracket firmly against the steering column tilt head in order to align the screws from the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly.





12. Slide the turn signal switch housing onto the steering column shaft assembly.

Caution: Refer to SIR Inflator Module Coil Caution in Service Precautions.

13. Install the windshield wiper and washer switch.
14. Install the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only.
15. Enable the SIR system.
