Service Procedure
Following are instructions for repairing a total of five wiring splices and inspecting a sixth. The first three splices can be accessed from the left front wheelhouse. The remaining two splices as well as the splice to be inspected can be accessed after the left front headlamp, parking lamp, and grille are removed. Please note that all five splices must be repaired and the sixth splice inspected, and if necessary, repaired in order to complete this repair.1. Open the hood.
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
3. Remove the six push-in retainers that attach the hood close out filler panel, and remove the panel.
4. Remove the one 10 mm hex head bolt and one Phillip head screw that attach the left parking lamp and grille assembly to the body.
5. Disconnect the socket and remove the parking lamp/grille assembly.
6. Remove the two 10 mm hex head bolts, disconnect the two lamp sockets and remove the left headlamp assembly.
7. Remove the 10 mm hex head bolt that attaches the upper front part of the windshield washer reservoir to the body.
8. Remove the windshield washer reservoir cap.
9. Raise the vehicle on a suitable hoist and support as necessary.
10. Remove the left front tire and wheel assembly.
11. Remove the eight 7 mm hex head screws and two push-in retainers that attach the front fender liner to the body and lower front fascia. Remove the fender liner.
12. Remove the two 7 mm hex head screws (2) and one pushing retainer (3) that attach the engine splash shield (1) to the body.
13. Disconnect the three clips attaching the wiring harness and remove the splash shield.
14. Remove the one 10 mm hex head bolt that attaches the fender brace to the body and loosen the other bolt that attaches the brace to the fender. Swing the brace out of the way as necessary.
15. Remove the two 10 mm hex head bolts that attach the windshield washer reservoir to the body. The air duct will remain attached to the reservoir.
16. Release the one push-in retainer and remove the reservoir from the body.
17. Disconnect the electrical connector and washer hose from the washer pump. Install a plug on the reservoir as necessary to stop the washer solvent from draining out of the reservoir.
18. Cut the black tape wrap to locate the three in-line splices in the wiring harness shown above. The three splices, # 107 (pink), # 108 (dark blue), and # 118 (light blue), are located approximately at the three arrows in the illustration.
Important
Only repair one splice at a time. DO NOT attempt to repair all three splices at one time.
19. Using wire cutters, remove the splice connector from one of the splices.
20. Using wire strippers, remove as much insulation from each wire as necessary to find clean, non-corroded wire.
Important
Make sure to fully insert the bare wires into the body of the connector before crimping in the next step.
21. Using wire crimpers and GM butt-end connector, splice the wires together.
22. Using the appropriate tool, heat shrink the butt connector to seal the connection.
23. Cut an electrical moisture sealant patch in halt and apply one piece to the new splice connection. Ensure that the patch is wrapped completely around the new splice.
24. Repeat steps 19-23 on each of the two remaining splices.
25. Position the three new splices in the harness and rewrap in black tape.
26. Position the windshield washer reservoir to the body and connect the electrical connector and washer hose.
27. Install the one push-in retainer and the two 10 mm hex head bolts that attach the reservoir to the body.
Tighten
Tighten to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
28. Position the fender brace to the body and install the one 10 mm hex head bolt.
Tighten
Tighten the 10 mm hex head bolt and the previously loosened bolt on the other end of the brace to 3 N.m (27 lb in).
29. Attach the wiring harness to the splash shield with the three clips.
30. Position the splash shield to the body and install the two 7 mm hex head screws and one push-in retainer.
Tighten
Tighten to 2 N.m (18 lb in)
31. Position the fender liner to the body and fascia and install the eight 7 mm hex head screws and two push-in retainers.
Tighten
Tighten to 2 N.m (18 lb in).
32. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
Tighten
Tighten to 140 N.m (103 lb ft).
33. Lower the vehicle.
34. Install the windshield washer reservoir cap.
35. Install the one 10 mm hex head bolt that attaches the upper front of the windshield washer reservoir to the body.
Tighten
Tighten to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
Important
The next two wiring harness splices to be repaired are located in front of the upper radiator support.
36. Release the wiring harness shown above from the rear of the bumper bar and inner fender panel.
37. Cut the black tape wrap to locate the two in-line splices in the wiring as shown above. The two splices, # 213 (purple) and # 113 (orange), are located approximately at the left and center arrows in the illustration.
38. Using wire cutters, remove the splice connector from one of the splices.
39. Using wire strippers, remove as much insulation from each wire as necessary to find clean, non-corroded wire.
Important
Make sure to fully insert the bare wires into the body of the connector before crimping in the next step.
40. Using wire crimpers and GM butt-end connector, splice the wires together.
41. Using the appropriate tool, heat shrink the butt-end connector to seal the connection.
42. Cut an electrical moisture sealant patch in half and apply one piece to the new splice connection. Ensure that the patch is wrapped completely around the new splice.
43. Repeat steps 38-42 on the remaining splices.
44. An additional black splice can be found towards the driver's side of the vehicle approximately at the right arrow in the illustration. Inspect this splice for signs of corrosion, and if found, repair the connection the same way. If no corrosion is found, do not remove the existing splice. Add the remaining half piece of electrical moisture sealant to it.
45. Rewrap all three splices in black electrical tape.
46. Secure the wiring harness to the rear of the bumper bar and inner fender panel.
47. Position the left headlamp assembly to the vehicle and connect the lamp sockets.
