Rear Hatch Rust (Refinish)

This bulletin is being revised to add model years. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 05-08-51-002 (Section 08-Body and Accessories).
Condition
Some customers may comment that the rear hatch panels exhibit rust. Possible perforation under the window weatherstrip flange may also be found.
Cause
An assembly fixture may have rubbed through the E-Coat during assembly. Refer to the arrows in the illustration above for rust locations.
Correction
All refinish operations require the use of products found in the 2005 GM4901M Approved Refinish Materials Manual.
1. For surface rust or small holes, spot blast and refinish.
2. Use mig welder to fill area with weld bead overlapping the edge of the existing hole.
3. Metal finish as necessary per the GM 4901 M-D-2005 Approved Refinish Materials Booklet.

3.1. Go to www.gmgoodwrench.com.
3.2. Click on GM Collision Parts.
3.3. Click on GM Technical Repair Information.
3.4. Click on Paint Shop.
4. Refinish the area using materials compliant to GM4901M standards.
5. Clean the back side of the repair and apply an epoxy undercoat per GM 4901M-D-2005.
