Transaxle ReplacementRemoval Procedure
1. Remove the hood from the vehicle.
Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.
2. Remove the battery.
3. Remove the 4 battery tray retaining bolts, then remove the battery tray from the vehicle.
4. Remove the air cleaner case assembly from the vehicle.
5. Remove the cruise control servo from the vehicle.
6. Remove the cylinder head cover from the engine.
7. Remove the clip, then disconnect the shift cable from the bracket.
8. Remove the shift cable retaining nut, then disconnect shift cable from the transaxle.
9. Remove the shift cable bracket retaining bolt, then position the shift cable out of the way.
10. Remove the 2 bolts and ground cables from the transaxle.
11. Disconnect the 3 transaxle wiring harness connectors from the transaxle.
12. Disconnect the breather hose from the transaxle.
13. Remove the 2 oil cooler pipe and filler retaining bolts.
14. Remove filler tube from the transaxle.
15. Disconnect the oil cooler pipes from the transaxle.
16. Disconnect the front exhaust pipe oxygen sensor electrical connector.
17. Install the engine support fixture.
18. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
19. Remove the front wheels.
20. Remove the left lower splash shield.
21. Remove the right lower splash shield.
22. Remove the starter assembly from the vehicle.
23. Remove the exhaust pipe from the vehicle.
24. Remove the flywheel inspection cover from the transaxle.
Important: Before removing the torque converter bolts, mark the position of the gray colored bolt for installation.
25. Remove the 6 flywheel-to-torque converter bolts.
26. Remove the transaxle drain plug and the oil.
27. Remove the left and right wheel drive shafts.
28. Support the transaxle with a suitable jack.
29. Remove the 5 bolts from the left engine mount then remove the mount from the vehicle.
30. Remove the 3 bolts from the left engine mount bracket, then remove the bracket from the vehicle.
31. Remove the rear transaxle mount trough bolt.
32. Remove the 3 nuts and the bolt from the transmission support.
33. Remove the rear transaxle mount from the vehicle.
34. Remove the front transaxle mount through bolt.
35. Remove the 4 transmission support retaining bolts, then lower the transmission support and the front mount from the vehicle.
36. Remove the front transaxle mount from the transaxle assembly.
37. Remove the rear transaxle mounting bracket from the transaxle assembly.
38. Remove the 6 transaxle to engine mounting bolts.
39. Slightly lower the transaxle.
40. Remove the transaxle from the vehicle.
Installation Procedure
1. Install the 6 transaxle to engine retaining bolts.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
^ Tighten the bolts (1) to 64 Nm (47 ft. lbs.).
^ Tighten the bolt (2) to 46 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
^ Tighten the bolts (3) to 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.).
2. Install the rear transaxle mounting bracket to the transaxle with the 3 bolts.
^ Tighten the bolts to 64 Nm (47 ft. lbs.).
3. Install the front transaxle mount to the transaxle with the 2 bolts.
^ Tighten the bolts to 64 Nm (47 ft. lbs.).
4. Install the transmission support with the 4 bolts on the vehicle.
^ Tighten the bolts (1) to 39 Nm (29 ft. lbs.).
^ Tighten the bolt (2) to 52 Nm (38 ft. lbs.).
5. Install the front mount through bolt.
^ Tighten the bolt to 52 Nm (38 ft. lbs.).
6. Install the rear transaxle mount to the transmission support.
7. Install the 3 nuts and bolt.
^ Tighten the bolt and 3 nuts to 52 Nm (38 ft. lbs.).
8. Install the rear transaxle mount through bolt.
^ Tighten the bolt and nut to 87 Nm (64 ft. lbs.).
9. Install the left transaxle mounting bracket and 3 bolts.
^ Tighten the bolts to 52 Nm (38 ft. lbs.).
10. Install the left mount to the body.
^ Tighten the 4 bolts to 52 Nm (38 ft. lbs.).
11. Install the left mount through bolt and nut.
^ Tighten the through bolt and nut to 80 Nm (59 ft. lbs.).
Important: The gray colored bolt must be installed first. This bolt is to insure proper alignment for the other 5 bolts.
12. Install the 6 torque converter bolts.
^ Tighten the bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
13. Install the flywheel inspection cover
14. Lower the jack from the transaxle.
15. Install the starter assembly in the vehicle.
16. Install the left and right drive shafts.
17. Install the exhaust pipe in the vehicle.
18. Install the front wheels.
19. Install the drain plug with a new gasket.
^ Tighten the drain plug to 17 Nm (13 ft. lbs.).
20. Install the left lower splash shield.
21. Install the right lower splash shield.
22. Lower the vehicle.
23. Remove the engine support fixture.
24. Connect the transaxle oil cooler pipes to the transaxle.
^ Tighten the oil cooler pipe nuts 35 Nm (25 ft. lbs.).
25. Install the oil filler tube with a new O-ring into the transaxle.
26. Install the 2 bolts with the oil cooler pipe clamp to the transaxle assembly.
^ Tighten the oil cooler pipe clamp bolts 6 Nm (49 inch lbs.).
27. Connect the shift cable to the transaxle, then install the nut.
^ Tighten the nut to 12 Nm (9 ft. lbs.).
28. Connect the shift cable to the transaxle, then install the clip.
29. Connect the shift cable to the cable bracket, then install the bracket bolt.
^ Tighten the nut to 12 Nm (9 ft. lbs.).
30. Connect the 3 electrical connectors to the transaxle.
31. Connect the oxygen sensor electrical connector.
32. Connect the 2 wire harness brackets, then install the 2 bolts.
^ Tighten the bolts to 12 Nm (9 ft. lbs.).
33. Install the 2 bolts and ground cables to the transaxle.
^ Tighten the bolts to 10 Nm (7 ft. lbs.).
34. Install the cruise control servo in the vehicle.
35. Install the battery tray and the 4 bolts.
^ Tighten the bolts to 13 Nm (9 ft. lbs.).
Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.
36. Install the battery.
37. Install the air cleaner case assembly.
38. Install the cylinder head cover in the engine.
39. Install the hood on the vehicle.
40. Fill the transaxle with 3.1 L (3.25 qt) of AC Delco T-IV (GM P/N 88900925).
