Transaxle Replacement

Removal Procedure





1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Remove the flywheel inspection cover from the transaxle.
3. Remove the starter assembly from the engine.

Important: Before removing the torque converter bolts, mark the position of the anodized, gold colored, bolt for installation.

4. Remove the 6 flywheel-to-torque converter bolts.
5. Remove the transaxle drain plug and the oil.
6. Remove the engine and transaxle as an assembly from the vehicle.




7. Remove the transfer case assembly from the transaxle.
8. Remove the 2 bolts and ground cables from the transaxle.





9. Disconnect the 3 transaxle wiring harness connectors from the transaxle.
10. Disconnect the breather hose from the transaxle.
11. Remove the front transaxle mount through bolt.





12. Remove the 6 transaxle to engine mounting bolts.
13. Separate the transaxle from the engine assembly.
14. Remove the left transaxle mounting bracket from the transaxle assembly.
15. Remove the front transaxle mounting bracket from the transaxle assembly.

Installation Procedure

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.





1. Install the front transaxle mounting bracket on the transaxle assembly.
^ Tighten the bolt to 64 Nm (47 ft. lbs.).
2. Install the left transaxle mounting bracket on the transaxle assembly.
^ Tighten the bolt to 52 Nm (38 ft. lbs.).
3. Position the transaxle on the front suspension crossmember.
4. Install the 6 transaxle to engine retaining bolts.
^ Tighten the bolts (1) to 64 Nm (47 ft. lbs.).
^ Tighten the bolt (2) to 46 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
^ Tighten the bolts (3) to 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.).





5. Install the front mount through bolt.
^ Tighten the bolt to 52 Nm (38 ft. lbs.).





6. Install the transfer case assembly on the transaxle.
7. Connect the 3 electrical connectors to the transaxle.
8. Install the 2 bolts and ground cables to the transaxle.
^ Tighten the bolts to 10 Nm (7 ft. lbs.).
9. Install the engine and transaxle as an assembly in the vehicle.





Important: The anodized (gold colored) bolt must be installed first. This bolt is to insure proper alignment for the other 5 bolts.

10. Install the 6 torque converter bolts.
^ Tighten the bolts to 28 Nm (20 ft. lbs.).
11. Install the starter assembly in the vehicle.
12. Install the flywheel inspection cover
13. Install the drain plug with a new gasket.
^ Tighten the drain plug to 49 Nm (36 ft. lbs.).
14. Lower the vehicle.
15. Fill the transaxle with 2.9 L (3.06 qt) of T-IV (GM Part No. 88900925).
