Interior - Seat Movement Rough When Sliding on Track

Bulletin No.: 05-08-50-006

Date: April 08, 2005

TECHNICAL

Subject:
Rough Motion Felt During Front Seat Movement (Install Seat Track Dampener)

Models:
2004 Pontiac GTO

Built Prior to VIN Breakpoint 4L397250

Condition

Some customers may comment that rough motion can be felt during front seat forward and rearward movements.

Correction

To smooth the forward and rearward operation of the seat, install a seat track dampener to both front seats using the procedure listed below.

1. Move the seat to the mid-position using the seat controls. Mid-position is when the front of the track rails are level.

2. Raise the seat to the full up position using the seat controls.

3. For older vehicles that do not have the cable tray-style wiring harness (built prior to March 2004), release the seat cushion cover flap J-clip.

4. Remove the side cover.

5. Remove the two front seat frame-to-cushion mounting nuts.

Important:
Take care not to overstretch any of the wires when you tilt the seat backward.

6. Tilt the seat backward.

On vehicles with the seat cushion cover flap, the flap will catch on the track assembly. It is not necessary to completely remove the flap as this will protect the wires from being stretched too far.

7. On later vehicles with the cable tray-style wiring harness (built after March 2004), unclip the cable tray from the track by lifting the front clips. Pull the cable tray forward to disengage the rear clips.

8. Position the dampener, P/N 92138926, by aligning the retaining tang over the motor mount flange and the friction pads over the drive shaft.

9. Tap the dampener retaining tang into place with a hammer.

The illustration above shows the dampener in its final position.

10. Reinstall the cable tray, if applicable.

11. Move the track until the driveshaft V-grooves are in the upper position.

Important:
In the next step, be sure to place paper under the area to protect the carpet from any drips.

12. Apply Permatex(R) 68040, GM P/N 12377901, or equivalent, to the groove until half-filled and work into the joint under the plastic spacer.

13. Operate the seat back and forth several times for a distance of 100 mm (4 in).

After this, DO NOT operate the seat for at least 1 hour to allow the Permatex(R) to set.

14. Lower the seat cushion onto the mounts and reinstall the nuts.

Tighten

Tighten the nuts to 28 N.m (21 lb ft).

15. Reattach the cover flap where applicable.

16. Reinstall the side cover.

17. Repeat this procedure on the other front seat.
