Brake Pad Inspection

Caution: Refer to Brake Dust Caution in Service Precautions.

- Inspect the brake pads at regular intervals, or whenever the tire and wheel assemblies are not on the vehicle.
- Measure the thickness of the brake pad lining at the 4 locations (1,2,3,4). The lining wear should be approximately even per axle set. Replace the brake pads if the thickness of the lining is less than the specification.
- The minimum brake pad lining thickness is 2.00 mm (0.079 inch).
- Inspect the brake pad for damage.
- Inspect the backing plate for corrosion.
- Inspect the lining for cracks or fractures.
- Inspect the lining for de-lamination from the mounting plate.
- If any of the conditions exist, replace the brake pads in axle sets.
- If replacement is not necessary, install the brake pads in the same locations as prior to removal.
