55. Oil Pan Clean and Inspect

Oil Pan Cleaning and Inspection





Important:
^ Do not use the oil pan cover or oil transfer tube gaskets again. Install NEW gaskets during assembly.
^ Do not use the oil pan to engine block gasket again. Install a NEW gasket during assembly.
^ When installing a NEW oil pan gasket, it is not necessary to install the rivets that retain the NEW gasket to the pan.

1. Drill (2) out the oil pan gasket retaining rivets (1), if required.
2. Remove the gasket (426) from the oil pan.





3. Remove the oil pan cover (434), nuts (452) and gasket (433).





4. Remove the oil filter fitting (438) and bypass valve (436), if required.





5. Remove the oil transfer tube bolts (435), studs (451), and gaskets (445).
6. Remove the oil transfer tube (447).
7. Inspect the tube for damage or restrictions.





8. Remove the oil pan baffle bolts and baffle.





9. Remove the plugs (449) from the oil galleries.





10. Remove the oil pan drain plug.





11. Clean the oil pan in solvent. Be sure to thoroughly clean all of the oil passages and recesses of the pan.
12. Clean the oil pan gasket surfaces.

Caution: Refer to Safety Glasses Caution in Service Precautions.

13. Dry the oil pan with compressed air.
14. Inspect the oil pan for the following conditions:
^ Gasket sealing surfaces for excessive scratches or gouging
^ Oil pan drain plug and threaded drain hole for damaged threads The drain plug O-ring seal may be used again if it is not cut or damaged.
^ Oil filter sealing surface for scratches or gouging
^ Oil passages for restrictions





15. Inspect the oil filter fitting (438) for a loose fit or damaged threads.
16. Inspect the oil filter bypass valve (436) for proper operation.
Lightly push the bypass valve into the bore. The valve spring should seat the valve to the proper position.
