TECHNICAL

Subject:
Wind Rush Noise from Outside Rear View Mirrors (File Down Mirror Upper Mounting Boss and Hard Landing)

Models:
2004 Pontiac GTO

Condition

Some customers may comment on a wind rush noise coming from one or both outside rear view mirrors.

Cause

This noise may be caused by an excessive gap between the mirror base and the window seal.

Correction

This condition can be corrected by filing down the mirror upper mounting boss and hard landing using the procedure listed below.

1. Determine whether wind noise emanates from the right hand or left hand side, and inspect for presence of gap between the mirror base and window seal. Proceed with repair below only if visual gap is present.

2. Remove the mirror from the door. Refer to the Mirror Replacement procedure in the Doors sub-section of the Service Manual.

3. Cut the rubber seal (1) back 1 mm (0.039 in) from the top of the upper screw mounting boss.

Note:
Do not remove too much material off the screw boss and hard landing otherwise the window operation (and seal) may be adversely affected.

4. File off 1 mm (0.039 in) from the upper screw mounting boss (2) and hard landing (3).

5. Reinstall the mirror to the door.

6. Check that the window operates correctly.
