Fuel Filter: Service and Repair
FUEL FILTER REPLACEMENTREMOVAL PROCEDURE
NOTE: Refer to Cover and Plug Openings Note in Service Precautions.
IMPORTANT:
- Always maintain cleanliness when servicing fuel system components.
- There is no service interval for in-line fuel filter replacement. Only replace the in-line fuel filter if the filter is restricted.
1. Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to Fuel Pressure Relief Procedure.
2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
3. Disconnect the fuel teed (4) and the fuel return (2) quick-connect fittings at the inlet of the in-line fuel filter.
4. Cap the fuel feed and the fuel return pipes as needed to stop any fuel leakage.
IMPORTANT: Use a back up wrench to prevent the fuel filter fitting from turning.
5. Remove the threaded nut fitting (1) from the outlet of the in-line fuel filter.
6. Drain any remaining fuel into an approved gasoline container.
7. Remove the in-line fuel bracket bolt.
8. Remove the in-line fuel filter from the mounting bracket.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
NOTE: Refer to Fuel System Ground Note in Service Precautions.
1. Remove the protective caps from the new in-line fuel filter.
2. Install the in-line fuel filter to the mounting bracket.
3. Install the in-line fuel filter and the mounting bracket.
NOTE: Refer to Fastener Note in Service Precautions.
4. Install the in-line fuel filter mounting bracket bolt.
Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 20 N.m (15 lb ft).
IMPORTANT: Use a back up wrench to prevent the fuel filter fitting from turning.
5. Install the threaded nut fitting (1) to the outlet of the in-line fuel filter.
Tighten
Tighten the threaded nut fitting to 30 N.m (22 lb ft).
6. Remove the caps from the fuel feed and the fuel return pipes.
7. Connect the fuel feed (4) and the fuel return (2) quick-connect fittings at the inlet of the in-line fuel filter.
8. Lower the vehicle.
9. Connect the negative battery cable.
10. Inspect for leaks.
10.1. Turn ON the ignition for 2 seconds.
10.2. Turn OFF the ignition for 10 seconds.
10.3. Turn ON the ignition.
10.4. Inspect for fuel leaks.
11. Install the fuel injector sight shield.
