21. Rear Planetary Gearset Replacement
Rear Planetary Gearset ReplacementRemoval Procedure
Caution: Refer to Safety Glasses in Service Precautions.
Notice: The low one-way clutch should be disassembled for inspection purposes only. If excessive wear or damage is found in any component of the low one-way clutch upon inspection, replace the low one-way clutch as an assembly.
Important: The rear planetary ring gear is a part of the intermediate shaft component group. For rear planetary ring gear disassembly and inspection, refer to Intermediate Shaft Replacement.
1. Inspect the low one-way clutch before disassembly by placing the low one-way clutch onto the rear planetary carrier, holding the low one-way clutch stationary and rotating the rear planetary carrier.
^ The rear planetary carrier should turn freely in a counterclockwise direction (2) and should not turn in a clockwise direction (3).
^ If the low one-way clutch is installed correctly (finished side up) on the rear planetary carrier and the rear planetary carrier can be turned clockwise, replace the low one-way clutch.
2. Remove the low one-way clutch snap rings (2) from both sides of the low one-way clutch outer race.
3. Remove the low one-way clutch retainers (2) from both sides of the low one-way clutch outer race (3) .
4. Remove the low one-way clutch sprag assembly from the low one-way clutch outer race.
5. Clean all the rear planetary gearset components and dry thoroughly.
6. Inspect the following components for excessive wear or damage and replace the low one-way clutch as necessary:
^ The low one-way clutch sprag assembly
^ The low one-way clutch outer race
7. Inspect the rear planetary carrier for excessive wear or damage and replace as necessary.
8. Use a feeler gage (2) to measure the rear planetary carrier pinion gear thrust clearance.
^ The standard front planetary carrier pinion gear thrust clearance should fall within 0.20 to 0.50 mm (0.008 to 0.020 inch).
^ If the front planetary carrier pinion gear thrust clearance is greater than 0.50 mm (0.020 inch), replace the front planetary carrier.
Installation Procedure
1. Install the low one-way clutch sprag assembly into the low one-way clutch outer race with the flanged side of the sprag assembly toward the finished (shiny) side of the low one-way clutch outer race.
2. Install the following components into both sides of the low one-way clutch outer race:
^ The low one-way clutch retainers
^ The low one-way clutch snap rings
3. Inspect the low one-way clutch after assembly by placing the low one-way clutch onto the rear planetary carrier, holding the low one-way clutch stationary and rotating the rear planetary carrier.
^ The rear planetary carrier (1) should turn freely in a counterclockwise direction and should not turn in a clockwise direction.
^ If the low one-way clutch is correctly installed (finished side up) on the rear planetary carrier and the rear planetary carrier can be turned clockwise, replace the low one-way clutch.
