Starter Motor: Service and Repair

STARTER MOTOR REPLACEMENT

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

CAUTION: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.




1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
2. Remove the starter motor electrical connector from the starter solenoid.
3. Remove the retaining nut and the positive (+) battery cable from the starter solenoid.
4. Remove the upper mounting bolt (1).
5. Remove the lower mounting bolt (2) and the starter motor from the vehicle.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE




1. Install the starter motor to the vehicle.
2. Install the upper mounting bolt finger tight (1).

NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

3. Install the lower mounting bolt (2).

Tighten
Tighten the lower mounting bolt to 37 N.m (27 lb ft).

4. Tighten the upper mounting bolt (1).

Tighten
Tighten the upper mounting bolt to 37 N.m (27 lb ft).

5. Install the starter motor electrical connector to the solenoid.
6. Install the positive battery cable and the retaining nut to the starter solenoid.

Tighten
Tighten the retaining nut to 9.8 N.m (84 lb in).

7. Connect the negative (-) battery cable.

Tighten
Tighten the negative battery cable to 15 N.m(11 lb ft).
