Brake Pedal Assembly Replacement

Removal Procedure
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the left closeout panel.
3. Remove the left ventilation ducts.
4. If the vehicle has a manual transmission, remove the clutch pedal bracket assembly.
5. Remove the cruise control release switch.
6. Remove the stop lamp switch.





7. Disconnect the accelerator pedal harness connector (5) from the accelerator pedal sensor (6).
8. Remove the brake master cylinder assembly.
9. Remove the vacuum brake booster.
10. Remove the 2 nuts (3,4) from the brake pedal bracket.





11. Remove the 3 bolts (6) from the brake pedal bracket (1).
12. Lower the rearward side of the brake pedal assembly.
13. Remove the brake pedal assembly from the vehicle.
14. Remove the nut (2) and the washer (3) from the brake pedal shaft (7).
15. Remove the brake pedal shaft and the washer (8) from the brake pedal bracket.
16. Remove the brake pedal with the return spring.
17. Remove the return spring.
18. Remove the brake pedal pivot bushings.

Installation Procedure





1. Apply GM Vehicle Care Dri-Slide Lubricant, GM P/N 1052948, or the equivalent NLGI No. 2 lithium soap based EP lubricant with molybdenum disulfide, to the brake pedal pivot bushings (1, 4) and to the push rod pivot point (5).
2. Install the brake pedal pivot bushings to the brake pedal.





3. Hold the brake pedal and the return spring in position and install the brake pedal shaft (7) and the washer (8) to the brake pedal bracket (1).

4. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

Install the washer (3) and the nut (2) to the brake pedal shaft.
Tighten the nut to 55 Nm (41 ft. lbs.).
5. Position the brake pedal assembly in the vehicle.

6. Important: Do not tighten the bolts yet.

Install the 3 bolts (6) in order to retain the brake pedal bracket.

7. Important: Do not install the brake master cylinder yet.

Install the vacuum brake booster. Install the booster push rod to the brake pedal.
8. If the vehicle has a manual transmission, install the clutch pedal bracket assembly.





9. Install the 2 nuts (3,4) to the brake pedal bracket.
Tighten the nuts to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
10. Install the accelerator pedal connector (5) to the accelerator pedal sensor (6).
11. Install the stop lamp switch.
12. Install the cruise control release switch.
13. Tighten the 3 bolts that retain the brake pedal bracket.
Tighten the bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
14. Install the brake master cylinder assembly and bleed the brake system.
15. Install the left ventilation ducts.
16. Install the left I/P lower insulator panel.
17. Connect the negative battery cable.
