Disc Brake Hardware Replacement - Rear
Removal Procedure
1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Remove the rear tire and wheel assembly.
3. Notice: Support the brake caliper with heavy mechanic's wire, or equivalent, whenever it is separated from its mount and the hydraulic flexible brake hose is still connected. Failure to support the caliper in this manner will cause the flexible brake hose to bear the weight of the caliper, which may cause damage to the brake hose and in turn may cause a brake fluid leak.
Important: Do NOT disconnect the hydraulic brake flexible hose from the caliper.
Remove the brake caliper and the pads as an assembly and support the assembly with heavy mechanic's wire (3), or equivalent. Verify that there is no tension on the brake hose (4).
4. Use a wrench in order to prevent the guide pins (4,10) from rotating.
5. Remove and discard the 2 guide pin bolts (6,7).
6. Separate the caliper housing (8) from the bracket (1).
7. Remove the 2 guide pins and the 2 guide pin boots (3,12) from the bracket.
8. Separate the 2 guide pins from the 2 guide pin boots.
9. Discard the 2 guide pin boots.
Inspection Procedure
1. Use denatured alcohol or an equivalent brake cleaner in order to clean all the metal parts (1,4,5,8,10,11).
2. Use dry, unlubricated, compressed air in order to dry the components.
3. Inspect the guide pin bores for corrosion or wear. Replace the caliper assembly if damage is evident.
4. Inspect the bracket (1) for damage. Replace the caliper assembly if damage is evident.
5. Inspect the 2 guide pins (4,10) for corrosion or wear. Replace the guide pins if damage is evident.
Installation Procedure
1. Lubricate the 2 guide pins (4,10) with silicone lubricant.
2. Install the guide pins to the bracket (1) WITHOUT the guide pin boots.
3. Install the caliper housing (8) to the bracket.
4. Use a wrench in order to prevent the guide pins from rotating.
5. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
Install 2 NEW guide pin bolts (6,7).
Tighten the bolts to 32 Nm (24 ft. lbs.).
6. Important: If any binding is evident, add more lubricant to the guide pins and replace the guide pin bolts.
Verify the guide pins and the caliper housing slide easily in the bracket.
7. Remove the bracket from the guide pins.
8. Install 2 NEW guide pin boots to the guide pins.
9. Install the bracket to the guide pins.
10. Complete the following procedure in order to install EACH guide pin boot:
1. Squeeze the guide pin boot in order to remove excess air.
2. Install the guide pin boot to the guide pin groove.
3. Install the guide pin boot to the bracket groove.
11. Verify the brake pads are located correctly.
12. Verify the spring clip is located correctly in the top of the caliper body.
13. Install the brake caliper and the pads as an assembly.
14. Install the rear tire and wheel assembly.
15. Lower the vehicle.
