Radiator Cooling Fan Motor: Service and Repair


Cooling Fan Motor Replacement - Electric

Tools Required
^ J38185 Hose Clamp Pliers
^ J39400-A Halogen Leak Detector

Removal Procedure

1. Caution: To help avoid personal injury or damage to the vehicle, a bent, cracked, or damaged fan blade or housing should always be replaced.

Important: Remove the radiator, fan and condenser as an assembly from the vehicle.

Remove the battery.
2. Remove the battery tray.
3. Recover the Air Conditioning (A/C) system.
4. Drain the cooling system.





5. Remove the upper transaxle cooler line.





6. Use the J38185 in order to reposition the radiator inlet hose clamp (1).
7. Remove the radiator inlet hose (2) from the radiator.
8. Use the J38185 in order to reposition the surge tank outlet/radiator outlet hose clamp (4) from the surge tank.
9. Remove the surge tank outlet/radiator outlet hose (6) from surge tank.
10. Remove radiator vent hose from radiator.





11. Remove the refrigerant pressure sensor electrical connector.





12. Remove the condenser inlet fitting from the discharge hose.

Important: Cap or tape off the open A/C hose to prevent system contamination.

13. Remove and discard the sealing washer.





14. Disconnect the cooling fan electrical connectors.
15. Remove the surge tank hose bolt from the intake manifold.
16. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
17. Remove the lower closeout panel.





18. Use the J38185 in order to reposition the surge tank outlet/radiator outlet hose clamp (7) from the radiator.
19. Remove the surge tank outlet/radiator outlet hose (6) from the radiator.





20. Remove the lower transaxle cooler line.





21. Remove the bolt from the evaporator hose to the condenser.
22. Remove the evaporator hose from the condenser.
23. Remove and discard the seal washer.





24. Remove the lower radiator support mounting panel.





25. Remove the radiator, fan and condenser as an assembly from the vehicle.





26. Remove the fan shroud from the radiator.





27. Remove the fan nuts (9) from the fans (1,8).
28. Remove the fans (1,8) from the fan motors (3,7).
29. Remove the fan motor bolts (2) from the fan motors (3,7).
30. Remove the fan motors (3,7).

Installation Procedure





1. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

Install the fan motor bolts (2) to the fan motors (3,7).
Tighten the bolts to 6 Nm (53 inch lbs.).
2. Install the fans (1,8) to the fan motors (3,7).
3. Install the fan nuts (9) to the fans (1,8).
Tighten the nut to 6 Nm (53 inch lbs.).





4. Install the fan shroud to the radiator.





5. Install the radiator, fan, and condenser as an assembly to the vehicle.





6. Install the lower radiator support mounting panel.
Tighten the bolts to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).





7. Remove the cap or tape from the evaporator hose.
8. Install a new seal washer on the condenser end of the evaporator hose assembly.
9. Install the evaporator hose to the condenser outlet.
10. Install the condenser outlet to the evaporator line bolt.
Tighten the bolt to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).





11. Install the lower transaxle oil cooler line.
Tighten the fitting to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.).





12. Use the J38185 in order to reposition the surge tank outlet/radiator outlet hose clamp (7).
13. Install the surge tank outlet/radiator outlet hose (6) to the radiator.





14. Install the cooling fan electrical connectors.
15. Install the lower closeout panel.
16. Lower the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
17. Install the surge tank outlet/radiator outlet hose bolt to the intake manifold.





18. Remove the cap or tape from the discharge hose.
19. Install a new seal washer to the discharge hose.
20. Install the condenser inlet fitting to the discharge hose.
Tighten to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).





21. Install the refrigerant pressure sensor electrical connector.





22. Install the upper transaxle oil cooler line fitting.
Tighten the fitting to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).





23. Install the surge tank outlet/radiator outlet hose (6) to the surge tank.
24. Use the J38185 in order to reposition the surge tank outlet/radiator outlet hose clamp (4) to the surge tank.
25. Install the radiator inlet hose (2) to the radiator.
26. Use the J38185 in order to reposition the radiator inlet hose clamp (1).
27. Refill the cooling system.
28. Recharge the A/C system.
29. Leak test the fittings of the reinstalled components using the J39400-A.
30. Install the battery tray.
31. Install the battery.
