Steering Wheel Position Sensor or Steering Shaft Lower Bearing Replacement

Removal Procedure





1. Caution: Refer to SIR Caution in Service Precautions.

Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling Zone 3 in SIR.
2. Remove the steering column from the vehicle.
3. Remove the steering shaft seal (1) from the sensor retainer (2).
4. Remove the sensor retainer (2) from the end of the steering jacket (3).





5. Remove the following items from the steering shaft assembly:
1. The lower spring retainer (1)
2. The steering wheel position sensor (2), refer to Steering Wheel Position Sensor Centering.
3. The lower bearing spring (3)
4. The lower bearing seat (4)
6. Remove the adapter and bearing assembly (5) from the steering column jacket assembly.

Installation Procedure





1. Position the tab on the adapter and bearing assembly (5) with the slot on the steering column jacket assembly.
2. Push the adapter and bearing assembly (5) onto the steering column jacket assembly (6).
3. Compress the lower bearing spring (3) to a length of 23 - 24 mm (0.91 - 0.94 inch) between the lower bearing seat (4), the steering wheel position sensor (2) and the lower spring retainer (1). Refer to Steering Wheel Position Sensor Centering.





4. Install the steering shaft seal (1) to the sensor retainer (2).
5. Install the sensor retainer (2) to the steering shaft assembly (3).
6. Install the steering column to the vehicle.
7. Enable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling Zone 3 in SIR.
