Hood Latch Release Cable: Service and Repair



Hood Latch Release Cable Replacement

Tools Required

J 38778 Door Trim Pad and Garnish Clip Remover


Removal Procedure





1. Open the hood.
2. Remove the left front headlamp. Refer toHeadlamp Assembly or Headlamp Bulb Replacement in Lighting Systems.
3. If the vehicle is equipped with a supercharger:

1. UseJ 38778 to remove the push-in retainers from the air intake ducts.
2. Remove the air intake ducts.


Important: Block the hood latch in order to prevent the hood from locking until you have installed the hood latch release cable.


4. Remove the hood latch. Refer toHood Latch Replacement .
Squeeze the cable retainer to remove the release from the hood latch.
5. Remove the front sheet metal diagonal brace. Refer toBrace Replacement - Front Fender Upper Diagonal .
6. Remove the air cleaner. Refer toAir Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls.
7. Tie a wire or string to the end of the hood release cable. Ensure that the end of the wire or string remains in the engine compartment.




8. Remove the hood release cable retainers from the engine compartment side rail.
9. Pull the carpet back to access the hood release.




10. Remove the nut from the parking brake bracket.
11. Remove the bolts from the hood release handle.
12. Remove the hood release cable from the hood release handle.




13. Use a small flat-bladed tool to remove the grommet from the dash panel.
14. Remove the hood latch release cable from the dash panel.



Installation Procedure





1. Tie the hood latch release cable to a wire or string. Route the hood latch release cable grommet through the dash panel.
2. Apply strip caulk sealer or equivalent around the grommet.
3. Install the hood latch release cable to the hood release handle.

Notice: Refer toFastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.

4. Install the bolts to the hood release handle.

Tighten the bolts to 5 Nm (44 lb in).

5. Install the nut to the parking brake bracket.

Tighten the nut to 5 Nm (44 lb in).

6. Pull the carpet back.




7. Install the hood latch release cable retainers to the engine compartment side rail retainers.
8. Route the hood latch release cable through the radiator support.
9. Install the air cleaner. Refer toAir Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls.
10. Install the front sheet metal diagonal brace. Refer toBrace Replacement - Front Fender Upper Diagonal .




11. Install the release cable to the hood latch.
12. Install the hood latch. Refer toHood Latch Replacement .
13. If the vehicle is equipped with a supercharger:

1. Install the air intake ducts.
2. Install the push-in retainers to the air intake ducts.

14. Install the left front headlamp. Refer toHeadlamp Assembly or Headlamp Bulb Replacement in Lighting Systems.
15. Remove the block from the latch mechanism.
16. Inspect the hood latch for proper operation.
17. Close the hood.
