Subject:
Door Binds On Fender When Opening (Align Fender And Reposition Door Cladding, If Needed)
Models:
2005 Pontiac Sunfire
Condition
Some customers may comment that the left front door cladding binds on the fender cladding when opening.
Cause
This condition may be caused by a hole mispositioned on the door.
Correction
Make the proper adjustments to the door and the tender to bring the gaps within specification.
The specification for gaps and flushness between door and fender are as follows: Gap - 4.0 mm. +/- 1.0 mm.
If the door still contacts the fender when opening, follow the procedure below.
1. Remove the two screws at the rear of the door and the two nuts at the front of the door as shown in the illustrations above.
2. With a light amount of pressure, pull the cladding away from the door. Use a small, flat-bladed screw driver to release the retainers by pushing the tabs in on the side of the retainers.
3. Remove the cladding.
4. With a rat-tail file, elongate the holes 1 to 2 mm.
5. Apply a touch-up paint to the bare metal and allow to dry.
