This bulletin is being revised to add additional DTCs. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 06-09-41-001 (Section 09 - Restraints).

Condition

Some customers may comment that the air bag and the "Passenger Air Bag Off" indicator lights remain on. Upon investigation, the technician may find DTC B1785, B1786, B1787 or B1788 set as current.

Cause

Confirm that the vehicle was not involved in a collision or no foreign object is lodged under the front passenger seat. If this is not the case, a customer may have lifted the seat frame by exerting extra force on the seatback.

The passenger presence system (PPS) includes four weight sensors on the frame of the passenger seat. In order to ensure accurate measurements, this system is equipped with self-protection logic. DTC B1785, B1786, B1787 or B1788 will turn on the air bag light and "Passenger Air Bag Off" light prompting a dealer visit. The DTC is set when the seat frame is lifted with 292 lbs (132.4 kg) of force. GM has increased this threshold to accommodate greater forces.

Correction

The passenger presence system (PPS) is a calibrated system that requires rezeroing when the system has been serviced or replaced. Refer to the Passenger Presence Rezeroing procedure in SI.

Replace the passenger seat frame and the passenger presence control module. Refer to the Front Passenger Side Seat Cushion Frame Replacement procedure in SI.
