Exhaust System - Leak at Exhaust Manifold

LE5 Engine Exhaust Leak/Noise at Exhaust Manifold to Cylinder Head (Replace Exhaust Manifold Fasteners)

Models:
2006-2007 Pontiac G6

with 2.4L I4 Ecotec(TM) Engine (VIN B - RPO LE5)

Condition

Some customers may comment on an exhaust leak/noise coming from the engine compartment. After further investigation, technicians may find the exhaust leak is coming from the exhaust manifold at the cylinder head.

Cause

This condition may have been caused when an incorrect fastener was used to install the exhaust manifold to the cylinder head.

Correction

It is not necessary to replace the exhaust manifold gasket.

Follow the procedure below to replace and tighten all 10 exhaust manifold nuts (one at a time, in sequence):

Remove the engine cover.

Remove the three exhaust manifold heat shield bolts.

Remove the exhaust manifold heat shield.

Remove the exhaust manifold nuts one at a time. Discard the nuts.

Replace the nuts with P/N 11516076.





Tighten the exhaust manifold nuts one at a time in the sequence shown.

Tighten

Tighten the nuts to 14 N.m (10 lb ft). Install the exhaust manifold heat shield. Install the three exhaust manifold heat shield bolts.

Tighten

Tighten the bolts to 23 N.m (17 lb ft).

Install the engine cover.

Start the vehicle and inspect for leaks.
