Oil Pan: Service and Repair




Oil Pan Replacement

Removal Procedure





1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the drive belt.
3. Remove the air cleaner inlet duct.
4. Remove the engine mount strut.
5. Install the engine support.
6. Raise and support the vehicle.
7. Place a suitable drain pan under the oil pan drain plug.
8. Remove the oil pan drain plug and drain the engine oil from the crankcase.

Notice: Refer to Component Fastener Tightening Notice in the Preface section.

9. Reinstall the oil pan drain plug and tighten.

Tighten
Tighten the drain plug to 25 Nm (18 lb ft).

10. Remove the right front fender liner.
11. Remove the starter.
12. Remove the engine oil cooler.
13. Remove the oil filter adapter.





14. Remove the air conditioning (A/C) compressor bolts and position the compressor aside.





15. Disconnect the oil level sensor electrical connector.
16. Remove the catalytic converter.





17. Remove the transaxle brace to oil pan bolts.
18. Remove the transaxle brace to transaxle bolt and remove the brace.





19. Remove the transaxle brace to oil pan bolts, if equipped with regular production option (RPO) MT2.
20. Remove the transaxle brace to transaxle bolt and remove the brace, if equipped with (RPO) MT2.





21. Remove the transaxle brace to oil pan lower bolt (6), if equipped with (RPO) M15.





22. Remove the flexplate to torque converter bolts.
23. Lower the vehicle.





24. Remove the engine harness ground nut (2) from the transaxle stud.
25. Remove the engine wiring harness ground (3) and the negative battery cable ground (1) from the transaxle stud.





26. Remove the engine wiring harness clip nut (1) from the transaxle stud.
27. Remove the engine wiring harness clip (1) from the transaxle stud.





28. Remove the engine wiring harness ground nut (2) from the transaxle stud.
29. Remove the engine wiring harness ground (2) from the transaxle stud.





30. Loosen, DO NOT REMOVE the transaxle studs (1) and bolts (2).
31. Using the engine support fixture, raise the engine and transaxle slightly.
32. Raise and support the vehicle.





33. Remove the oil pan bolts (1 and 2).
34. Separate the engine and transaxle approximately 13 mm (1/2 in).





35. Ensure that when removing the oil pan, the pan clears the boss (1) on the transaxle.
36. Remove the oil pan, if the pan cannot be removed, lower the vehicle and perform steps 29 and 31 again until the pan can be removed.
37. Remove and discard the oil pan gasket.
38. Clean the oil pan sealing surfaces.

Installation Procedure





1. Apply sealer to both sides of the crankshaft rear main bearing cap. Press the sealer into the gap using a putty knife.
2. Apply sealer to both sides of the front cover/block mating area.
3. Install a NEW oil pan gasket.
4. Position the oil pan to the engine.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

5. Install the oil pan bolts (1 and 2).

Tighten
^ Tighten the bolts (1) to 50 Nm (37 lb ft).
^ Tighten the bolts (2) to 25 Nm (18 lb ft).






6. Lower the vehicle.
7. Using the engine support fixture, lower the engine and transaxle.
8. Tighten the transaxle studs (1) and bolts (2).

Tighten
Tighten the bolts/studs to 90 Nm (66 lb ft).





9. Install the engine wiring harness ground (1) to the transaxle stud.
10. Install the engine wiring harness ground nut (2) to the transaxle stud.

Tighten
Tighten the nut to 25 Nm (18 lb ft).





11. Install the engine wiring harness clip (2) to the transaxle stud.
12. Install the engine wiring harness clip nut (1) to the transaxle stud.

Tighten
Tighten the nut to 25 Nm (18 lb ft).





13. Install the negative battery cable ground (1) and the engine wiring harness ground (3) to the transaxle stud.
14. Install the engine harness ground nut (2) to the transaxle stud.

Tighten
Tighten the nut to 25 Nm (18 lb ft).





15. Raise and support the vehicle.
16. Install the flexplate-to-torque converter bolts.

Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 62 Nm (46 lb ft).





17. Install the transaxle brace to oil pan lower bolt (6), if equipped with (RPO) M15.

Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 50 Nm (37 lb ft).





18. Position the transaxle brace and install the transaxle brace to transaxle bolt until snug, if equipped with (RPO) MT2.
19. Install the transaxle brace to oil pan bolts, if equipped with (RPO) MT2.

Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 50 Nm (37 lb ft).





20. Position the transaxle brace and install the transaxle brace to transaxle bolt until snug.
21. Install the transaxle brace to oil pan bolts.

Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 50 Nm (37 lb ft).





22. Connect the oil level sensor electrical connector.
23. Install the catalytic converter.





24. Position the A/C compressor and install the bolts.

Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 50 Nm (37 lb ft).

25. Install the right front fender liner.
26. Install the starter.
27. Install the oil filter adapter.
28. Install the oil cooler.

Tighten
Tighten the drain plug to 26 Nm (19 lb ft).

30. Lower the vehicle.
31. Remove the engine support fixture.
32. Install the engine mount strut.
33. Install the air cleaner inlet duct.
34. Install the drive belt.
35. Fill the crankcase.
36. Connect the negative battery cable.
