Condition

Some customers may comment on a coolant leak. The comments may range from spots on the driveway to having to add more coolant.

Correction

- If the coolant leak is coming from the front (accessory drive end) of the engine, the coolant crossover gaskets should be replaced. Refer to the latest version of Corporate Bulletin Number 07-06-02-006.

- If the coolant leak is coming from the rear (transmission end) of the engine, follow the appropriate diagnostic information in SI. If the leak is found to be coming from a cylinder head gasket, the gasket must be replaced.

When replacing the cylinder head gasket, be advised that smaller flange hex head bolts are now to be used at locations 5 and 8. The smaller flange hex bolts are the same as the ones used at the other six locations. When installing the two small flange hex head bolts at locations 5 and 8, a new style lower intake manifold gasket that has provisions to allow for the smaller flange bolts must be used. These new lower intake manifold gaskets are contained in the gasket kits listed below. Replace the other six bolts as well as stated in SI.

Important
When cleaning the cylinder head and block, care should be taken not to damage the sealing surfaces. A non-metallic scraper is recommended.

Caution
Failure to use the new lower intake manifold gaskets when installing the smaller flange hex head bolts at locations 5 and 8 may result in the lower intake manifold not fitting properly, which may result in a leak condition.

Note
Lower intake manifold gaskets contained in older gasket kits will not have the provisions needed when installing the smaller flange bolts.

* For this repair, either the right or left labor code should be used and the second part claimed as a secondary part and the labor time as OLH. The additional OLH time should be less than replacing one side since the repair set up time included in every labor time is not necessary. In addition, if there is time to access the part that has already occurred in replacing the primary part, that time should be excluded. Follow straight time clock on/off policies to document the incremental time for the second part. The justification for replacing the second side should be documented on the repair order.
