Brake Pad: Testing and Inspection
Brake Pad Inspection
^ Caution: Refer to Brake Dust Caution in Service Precautions.
Inspect the brake pads at regular intervals, or whenever the tire and wheel assemblies are not on the vehicle.
^ Measure the thickness of the brake pad lining at the 4 locations (1,2,3,4). The lining wear should be approximately even per axle set. Replace the brake pads if the thickness of the lining is less than the specification.
The minimum brake pad lining thickness is 2.00 mm (0.079 in).
^ Inspect the brake pad for damage.
^ Inspect the backing plate for corrosion.
^ Inspect the lining for cracks or fractures.
^ Inspect the lining for de-lamination from the mounting plate.
^ If any of the conditions exist, replace the brake pads in axle sets.
^ If replacement is not necessary, install the brake pads in the same locations as prior to removal.
