Camshaft: Service and Repair



Camshaft Replacement

Tools Required
^ J41476 Front and Rear Cover Alignment Tool

Removal Procedure





1. Remove the engine assembly.
2. Remove the crankshaft balancer.
3. Remove the oil level indicator tube.
4. Remove the left and right exhaust manifolds
5. Remove the water pump.
6. Remove the intake manifold.
7. Remove the engine valley cover.
8. Remove the coolant air bleed pipe.
9. Remove the left and right valve rocker arm covers.
10. Remove the valve rocker arms and push rods.
11. Remove the left and right cylinder heads.
12. Remove the valve lifters.
13. Remove the oil pan-to-front cover bolts (2).





14. Remove the front cover bolts (501).
15. Remove the front cover and gasket (503). Discard the old gasket.





16. Rotate the engine in order to align the timing marks (1, 2).





17. Remove the camshaft sprocket bolts (206).
18. Remove the timing chain (205), from the camshaft sprocket, and allow the timing chain to rest on the crankshaft sprocket.
19. Remove the camshaft.

Installation Procedure





1. Install the camshaft.
2. Align the camshaft sprocket alignment mark (1), in the 6 o'clock position.





3. Install the camshaft sprocket (205) and timing chain (208).

4. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

Install the camshaft sprocket bolts.
Tighten the camshaft sprocket bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).



5. Apply a 5 mm (0.2 inch) bead of sealant GM P/N 12378521 (Canadian P/N 88901148), or equivalent 20 mm (0.8 inch) long to the oil pan to engine block junction.





6. Install the front cover and a new gasket (503).
7. Install the front cover bolts, until snug.





8. Install the oil pan-to-front cover bolts, until snug.





9. Install the J41476 and crankshaft balancer bolt to the front cover.
10. Align the tapered legs of the J41476 with the machined alignment surfaces on the front cover.
11. Install the crankshaft balancer bolt, until snug. Do not overtighten.
1. Tighten the oil pan-to-front cover bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
2. Tighten the engine front cover bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).

12. Remove the J41476.
13. Install a NEW crankshaft front oil seal.
14. Install the valve lifters.
15. Install the right and left cylinder heads.
16. Install the valve rocker arms and push rods.
17. Install the right and left valve rocker arm covers.
18. Install the coolant air bleed pipe.
19. Install the intake manifold.
20. Install the water pump.
21. Install the left and right exhaust manifolds.
22. Install the oil level indicator tube.
23. Install the crankshaft balancer.
24. Install the engine assembly.
