Transmission Replacement

Removal Procedure





1. Remove the transmission shift control.
2. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
3. Remove the transmission oil drain plug.
4. Drain the oil from the transmission.
5. Support the rear of the vehicle with safety stands.
6. Remove the catalytic converters.
7. Remove the propeller shaft.
8. Remove the starter motor.





9. Remove the clip (1) from the transmission.
10. Disconnect the backup lamp switch electrical connector (2).





11. Disconnect the following electrical connectors:
^ Skip shift solenoid (1)
^ Reverse lockout solenoid (2)
^ Vehicle speed sensor (3)

12. Remove the push in retainer (4) and wiring harness bracket.
13. Support the engine with safety stands.





14. Remove the right transmission close-out cover and bolt (1).





15. Remove the left transmission close-out cover and bolt (1).





16. Remove the retaining clip (1), then disconnect the clutch hydraulic line from the slave cylinder connector.
17. Remove the transmission crossmember support.
18. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
19. Slowly lower the transmission to access the transmission bolts.

20. Important:
Leave the 2 clutch housing to engine block retaining bolts located at the 10 and 2 o'clock positions tight at this time.

Remove the 6 remaining transmission retaining bolts.
21. Remove the 2 remaining transmission retaining bolts.





22. Pull the transmission rearward to just clear the locating dowels, then rotate the transmission 90 degrees to the right to gain clearance from the vehicle floor pan.
23. When the transmission input shaft clears the clutch pressure plate, lower the transmission from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure
1. Place the transmission in the 3rd gear position.
2. With the transmission positioned 90 degrees to the right side, position the transmission in the vehicle up to the locating dowels on the engine.
3. Slowly raise the transmission until in place.





4. Install the transmission (1) to the vehicle, then rotate the transmission to the upright position.
5. Install the transmission bolts (2).





6. Notice:
Refer to Fastener Notice.

Tighten the transmission retaining bolts.

Tighten the transmission bolts to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).

7. Install the transmission crossmember support.
8. Remove the transmission jack from the transmission.





9. Install the right transmission close-out cover and bolt (1).





10. Install the left transmission close-out cover (1).
11. Connect the clutch actuator cylinder pipe to the clutch master cylinder hose.





12. Push together the clutch hydraulic hose fittings, then install the retaining clip (1).
13. Check the clutch hydraulic hoses for kinks or twists.
14. Remove the engine safety stands.





15. Install the wiring harness bracket and push in retainer (4).
16. Connect the following electrical connectors:
^ Vehicle speed sensor (3)
^ Reverse lockout solenoid (2)
^ Skip shift solenoid (1)





17. Connect the backup lamp switch electrical connector (2).
18. Install the clip (1) to the transmission.
19. Install the starter motor.
20. Install the catalytic converters.
21. Install the propeller shaft.
22. Remove the rear axle safety stands.
23. Install the transmission oil drain plug.

Tighten the transmission oil drain plug to 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.).

24. Refill the transmission with fluid. Refer to Transmission Fluid Replacement.
25. Bleed the clutch hydraulic system. Refer to Hydraulic Clutch Bleeding.
26. Lower the vehicle.
27. Install the transmission shift control assembly.
