Seal Replacement - Intermediate Steering Shaft
Removal Procedure
1. Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key from the ignition lock cylinder in order to lock the steering column.
2. Pull the intermediate shaft seal from the steering column.
3. Remove the Intermediate shaft pinch bolt from the intermediate shaft.
4. Disconnect the intermediate shaft from the steering column. Note the alignment for assembly.
5. Carefully lower the intermediate shaft.
6. Collapse the intermediate shaft in order to gain clearance.
7. Cut back the insulation around the inner intermediate shaft seal in order to access the seal bolts.
8. Remove the intermediate shaft seal bolts.
9. Important: The intermediate shaft does not need to be removed from the vehicle.
Remove the intermediate shaft seal from the inside of vehicle.
Installation Procedure
1. Install the intermediate shaft seal over the intermediate shaft from inside the vehicle.
2. Connect the intermediate shaft to the steering column as noted during removal.
3. Notice: Install the upper intermediate shaft pinch bolt.
Tighten the bolt to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
4. Install the intermediate shaft seal bolts.
^ Tighten the intermediate shaft seal bolts to 3 Nm (27 inch lbs.).
5. Connect the intermediate shaft seal to the steering column.
6. Important: Rotate the lower seal in order to obtain proper shaft to seal clearance.
Connect the lower intermediate shaft seal to the steering gear.
